Any ideas on how to hook VDO oil temp sender?

Post by CptanPanic2 »

I have my type 1 oil temp sender that went in type 1 oil drain plug, but a type 4 plug is M12, whereas the M14. I guess my only option is to open up the whole, but I wanted to see if anyone had any opinions on the oil sender.

Captain,
Why not buy a sending unit for your type 4 case? Maybe they're hard to find I don't know. But I also don't see any problem with retaping the hole, just make sure that there is no diffence between the 2 as far as the length that it goes in. I don't think you'd want anything to hit it internally. Let me know what you end up doing 'cause I'm planning on building a type 4 engine for my beetle.

Go to http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/sho ... atalog.htm and get a unit for a 914.

I read what Oliver says, and does anyone know where the original 914 sender hole is? Also I have 2 holes in my case, 1 where the type 4 oil filler went into the front of the case, and another similar one on the right side of the case(looking at pulley) near the back. I will be making some aluminum covers for these, and I was wondering if I would be able to mount the sender there? How far up from the bottom does the oil fill up when the engine is running?

The right side of the case(looking at pulley) near the back is where the sender mounts on a T4.

The best way to do it is to use the adaptor plate and sender that the VDO catalog used to call for. The plate, which replaces the rear sump plate (the one on the bottom close to the oil filler mount), has a boss in it all set up for the oil temp sender. It's definitely the way I'd go.

I don't know if it is still available, but I'll check.

I was going to drill a hole in the sump plate and braze a fitting to it. quick and cheap. But If I can find the Porsche bits, that woulds be nice, and it's probably a long shot.

Hey Tmk,
Is where the sender mounts in the hole right next to last pushrod tube on right side. I have a 1.7 914 case that has this filled in, but on the transporter case, this is opened. I am going to plug this up, and I was wondering if this would make a good place for the sender?

Nope, the sender goes in the rear sump plate. Actually, it threads into a second plate that is on top of that plate, but close enough.

Holes in the side would probably be for oil pressure or oil relief valves.
