==Acapulco Color Scheme==

VW's aircooled mini SUV. Great for riding in the country, or cruising the beach.

==Acapulco Color Scheme==

Post by MNAirHead »

We're getting ready to redo an Acapulco... unofrtunately some of the
coloring can be off.

Here's an intersting snip from a STF thread
There were efforts to come up with a "vacation Resort SUV" since 1971. A few pictures of early cars exist, primarily show next to no color mixture.
The first Acapulcos were produced in 73 for Acapulco resorts and they became very popular among turist, specialy from the US. After vacationers returned home and started asking to the local dealer for such cars vw made them available for the US.
Records showing production car by car for 1973 and 1974 are lost. People who were in production during the Acapulco age have said that about 400 cars were fitted with such package.
Originaly white and blue Acapulcos were sold to The Princess hotel in Acapulco Guerrero, Mexico. White and pink cars were included with a bungalo or villa while staying at Las Brisas in Acapulco. Rental car business usualy offered regular Safaris,and no special color was used.
Pulmonias was the Spanish name given to a type of public transportacion that mixed the size of a taxi with the price and the crowness of a bus. This Pulmonias "neumonia" most times carried no windows and holes in the canvas during heavy rain. They resembled the Acapulcos but the mayority were just Safaris.
I have seem at least one Acapulco with air conditioning

Here are some pix... please add any pix and/or note problems.

Does anyone have a link to the true OEM color scheme of an Acapulco?

Interesting Acapulco Threads

Acapulco
In 1974 the THING "Acapulco" model was available, a stock THING with a few minor trim changes. They had blue and white paint & interior (look behind the dash panels, this should be blue), running boards (pans had extra nuts welded on the edge), usually a surry top and either a hardtop or a soft top. In as most of the purchasers of Acapulco's left the surry top behind at the dealers, there was no shortage of tops and frames in the middle 70's.

The earliest photo of an Acapulco prototype dates from the Puebla factory in 1972, right after they started Type-181 Safari production. As early as 1973 the Surry top and the running boards were seen in VW of America advertisements with the note that the surry top was a "Future Option". Although the parts certainly existed in Mexico at that time, it is unlikely that there were 1973 Acapulco THINGS sold by VW of America. There were some Acapulco's built in Mexico in 1973 for the resort trade, including a few with a pink and white colour scheme.
