Here's an intersting snip from a STF thread
There were efforts to come up with a "vacation Resort SUV" since 1971. A few pictures of early cars exist, primarily show next to no color mixture.
The first Acapulcos were produced in 73 for Acapulco resorts and they became very popular among turist, specialy from the US. After vacationers returned home and started asking to the local dealer for such cars vw made them available for the US.
Records showing production car by car for 1973 and 1974 are lost. People who were in production during the Acapulco age have said that about 400 cars were fitted with such package.
Originaly white and blue Acapulcos were sold to The Princess hotel in Acapulco Guerrero, Mexico. White and pink cars were included with a bungalo or villa while staying at Las Brisas in Acapulco. Rental car business usualy offered regular Safaris, and no special color was used.
Pulmonias was the Spanish name given to a type of public transportacion that mixed the size of a taxi with the price and the crowness of a bus. This Pulmonias "neumonia" most times carried no windows and holes in the canvas during heavy rain. They resembled the Acapulcos but the mayority were just Safaris.
I have seem at least one Acapulco with air conditioning
