Split Bus empty weight

Post by Mood »

I was reading in Wikipedia that the Bay bus is "considerably heavier" than the splitty:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Type_2

I could find out online that the empty weight of a 1978 Bay bus is from 2700lbs (panel van) to 3300lbs for a camper. Kombis weigh 3000lbs.
What is the empty weight of a split?
Wikipedia said the same thing about the Vanagon compared to a Bay, what does a Vanagon weigh?

Well I can tell you that my '66 E-Z Camper with custom interior and most camping gear stowed inside tipped the certified truck scales at 2750#. This is with a 3/4 length roof rack with 1/4" plywood for a deck and side ladder. I have read somewhere in a VW manual that curb weight for a panel is around 2100# which sounds about right considering the weight of my bus. Hope this helps. . .

Thanks, that helps a lot. If a bay is 600lbs heavier, it justifies the statement "significantly heavier". 2100lbs for the bare bones panel van is light vehicle by most standards, it helps explain why some drag buses are as quick as they are.
