==Thing Tranny - Toughess compared to STD IRS==

Post by MNAirHead »

Howdy.

I know our thing is geared differently...

bugs of this era received a freeway flyer.

Does the thing tranny have anything different going on inside? Meaning super diff type setup etc?

Looking to learn.

Check under the transaxle forum - there is LOTS of info comparing and contrasting various transmissions vs. the Thing tranny.

You're right - search results weren't real apparent. Here's one that I started a few months ago:

http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic ... ight=thing

I've read the Thing's "O" diff is the best stock diff for non-bus transmissions. Also that the gearing makes for a lower top speed, but not THAT much of a difference. Others have used freeway flyers in Things with success. If you do a changeover, make sure to keep your CV flanges.

Hope this stuff gets you some answers....

Thanks for the link...

I did find a few sketchy threads... no direct answers.

Your posting was probably the best...

Still looking.

Yes would keep the flanges.

You are confusing the ring and pinion gears with the diff. The diff housing used in a Thing is identical to the one used in a Bug.

The difference is the R&P. Most (not all) Things use an O type R&P. The difference is the shape of the gear tooth. Other types of gear tooth shapes are the G type and the K type. In the 4.12 gear ratio, the O type is the strongest. The K type is next, and the G type is the weakest. I have found G type R&Ps in Thing transmissions. I figure that when they ran out of O types, they substituted whatever they had.

==Bigger Wheels==

Post by MNAirHead »

I'm looking forward to gehttong out my 73 181.

I unsuccessfully put bigger tires on it once before.. drove horrid compared to our stock tires.

I'm looking toward satin centerlines.

Any tips to the success (beyond balalanced tires, fitting in the fenders etc)

With melting snow and spring around the corner I am waiting to get both my Things ready for a new season. I have 5 x 130 Centerlines on the offroad Ting and Porsche wheels on the road car. The offorad Thing sits so high folks alwasy think it is lifted. I have 215 75 15 BFG KO on the back of the offroad Thing. I built this trans using very special parts including close ratio WEddle elctron beam welded third adn fourth gears adna Quaffe ZD LSD diff. Nothing like running down a muddy trail throwing dual rooster tails.
