Hey all,

I was browsing over at the Samba and I found this page:

I highly recommend the book "Die grossen VW" ("The big Volksvagen") to anyone intrested in the Type4 history. It covers the story behind the Type3 and 4 cars, how they developed (with changes year by year in detail) and how they were ended. A lot of historical pictures are included.

For example it tells about an automatic, cumputerized steering control that was developed in 1971 for the 411 to automatic compensate the steering in sudden side wind without affecting the steering wheel.

Sorry, it is only available in german but still its a wery good book...

To not effect the movement at the steering wheel, VW must have developed a powered steering system where there is no physical mechanical link between the steering wheel and the road wheel, as opposed to a power assisted system? I believe powered steering systems are banned under European design rules and the car manufacturers are currently trying to get this legislation abolished as it is holding back development.

I think the Citroen DIRAVI steering, as used in the CX and SM models, was the closest thing to a proper power steering system to be seen in production cars. An enthusiast once demonstated this system to me; with the engine switched off and the hydraulic accumulator completely exhausted you could turn the steering wheel about 10 degrees before the mechanical backup link in the system would turn the road wheel! With the engine running and pressurised, the road wheel would react to the smallest movements of the steering wheel. Citroen developed this because it allowed them to vary the amount of 'feel' felt at the wheel according to road speed, it also meant the direction of the road wheel was not affected by bad road surfaces or tyre blowouts as the system only reacts to steering wheel input.

Hmmm, the idler arm and centre link aren't looking too great on the 412 Variant...

Found a neat little VW book that in 67 pages lists all kind of technical data such as the nominal axial play for the windshield viper motor...things you always wanted to know...

Nice find! but its in swedisch...

The crown-pignon wheel setting I did always wanted to know (in general) how to set that, so its a neat brochure for sure.

I have "Without Guess Work" on my computer. This manual gives all the tolerances and wear limits for the engine, transmission, axles etc. for all aircooled VW's from '71-'72 and it's in english. If anyone's intersted I can send this by e-mail.
