Whilst there I came across the story about this car...

Unfortunately most of the site is in German, but I did my best to translate this story using Bablefish! It seems this car was developed for Volkswagen by Porsche in parallel with their own 901 project (which of course turned into the 911) as a result the car seems to be based on early 911 running gear, notice the early 911 steel wheels? It has the 911 style front suspension; and while early prototypes used the torsion bar semi-trailing arm suspension like the 911, later prototypes used coil springs like the Type 4 as this was found to make a big improvement in the way the car handled! It also features an air-cooled flat 6 engine!! The museum website doesn't say what this engine was based on, only that it has a capacity of 1998cc and developed 90hp at 4500rpm. I've read in some books that it was based on the type 1 engine, but in others that it was based on the as yet unreleased type 4 motor!
Has anyone seen this car in the flesh and had a look underneath? Does anyone know anything more about this project? It must have had an influence on the design of the Type 4...
I wish they had put this car into production as I really fancy having a Variant with 911 running gear! It must sound amazing!
