hey
ive been having trouble getting my motor started again
the guy i got it from started it in front of me
but now that i refurbished some stuff on it it doesnt want to seem to turn over
i replaced the plug wires, and a seconday in-line fuel filter that was between the pump and carb.
it will kick over a few times if i spray some ether in it.
i thnk it has to do wil the fuel, because everytime i go to start it then go check the filter has barley any gas in it. (its one of those fancy glass ones)
help!

Also make sure the gas tank "sock" is not choked up with rust and debris. Sometimes it is worth cleaning (or resealing) an unknown gas tank.
Maybe start it off a little jerry can with a fuel hose in it. Be careful of course.
Is the gas old?
I agree in trashing the glass filter, the el cheapo in line filters are perfectly fine. I advise putting the filter before the fuel pump. Please use clamps just in case.
Oh yes! Replace ALL old fuel line with NEW cloth braided hose. Use your favorite VW shop / store as the local chain parts stores do not carry the right stuff.

You can get to the sock from under the bus, easy job, unless the tank is full of gas. You will see where the fuel line exits the tank, unfortunately if the tank has fuel it is best to drain it out. Unless you are into gas baths.
I personally do not replace the sock and will remove them, just tear off the old screen, reuse the sealing washer and reinstall. To easy for crud to build up around the sock and that is where water will reside and that leads to rust. Not exactly the gospel, just the way I do it. The new, non glass filter you will be installing will capture any particles.
