back preassure

Post by Piper »

How much do I need on my 1.9 in my 83 Westy to get decent mileage, and performance? I'm in need of a new exaust, and wondering if I could have something custom fabbbed to save a bit of green that uses two mufflers, but way less piping between the engine, and mufflers. Right now the stock exaust looks about ten feet long, and consists of four different pipes meeting before the muffler. Would two sets of two coming from the engine, and meeting directly into a muffler on either side work? My exaust has a hole in it now, and I'd like to keep the "lawn mower" like sound it has with the new exaust.

The important thing is to keep each header equall length.. but as its a pain to do (and more pipework).. vw didnt bother..

Depends on a lot of factors... important if you want the most torque/power and efficiency...
but for a volume manufacturer, they trade off ok performance against the cost of developing and producing a more complex system... thats why vw didnt bother... cost..

so back to my original question, will two shorter exausts work, or do I have to do the maze of pipes VW origially used in order to get decent performance and mileage?

the early system has 2 short pipes and the late system has bigger differences, just what I have said before... so if it was adequate for vw... you should be fine...
