it turns freely, how could it do this? completely exploded...

You mean...the crank turns freely. My bet is that a piston siezed...ad teh connecting rod snapped throwing chunks through teh case but not destroying the crank and journals. Ray

ray is probably right since it lost oil pressure before it went boom... the PO said that his son kept driving after the light came on. i wonder how far he drove :?:

You're right, it was a rod grenade. Looks like the nuts stripped. #2 is bent bad too. Interesting tear-down... Nasty oil - what was left of it anyway.
