411 Auto Starter Woes

Post by type3 »

Hi all,
When turning the engine over the starter engages and the engine fires... but there's a god awful grinding sound. It stops as soon as the starter has finished doing it's business. Definitely metal on metal. Any ideas? The starter has been taken out and it looks okay and the teeth aren't worn. It's quite possible it's not the original starter so are Auto starter motors unique?

Auto starter motors are slightly different as they have as shorter shaft with an internal support mechanism. In other words they do not protrude into a bushing in the housing. They are also suitable to use in standard trannys as they need no support. They also have slightly more torque. If you have teh wrong starter...it will be misaligned and cause grinding. Ray

Cheers Ray. I'll check the part numbers to see if it's the incorrect one.

Thanks.
