The do-it-yourself master cylinder rebuild project died from lack of a 19mm bore replacement BUT my 411 mechanic found someone who was able to rebuild the existing one for a tidy sum with a 6-month guarantee - so the blue sapphire ventured out on the road again yesterday and reclaimed its familiar position in front of our house.
While away 'on vacation', it acquired a new antenna - but still lacks a working radio (corroded speakers, I presume).
The Speedo lives in an unpredictable world of its own and the fuel gauge quivers with excitement, even if the tank is empty!
The ride is still bumpy and the front suspension could use a few parts - apparently swappable with other VW models (bugs, etc.).
Meanwhile, time is taking its toll on all the interior fabric components and the dash looks like a jumble of California quake faults.
Ah well, it's still winter and we'll let Old Blue Eyes await a Spring rejuvenation. But at least he'll be getting some exercise now and stretching his tires, making local trips to the market - and gas station!
