Grant Steering Wheel adapter? which one?

Post by DocLong »

Looking to put a Grant "Classic" steering wheel on my 73 412. CB Performance lists two adapters for the grant classics....

Grant Steering Wheel Adapter Kit - fits 1960 to '73 VW Beetle

and

Grant Steering Wheel Adapter Kit - fits 1974-on VW Beetle

I know my car is a 73...but I am not sure theearly splines carried over to the 412. Anyone know?

Thanks.

Well...the steering wheel of the type 4 (thats 411 after 71 and all 412) is basically identical to the wheel that came on all LATE type 3 until its end in 73. I would tell them that and they should know what will fit. Ray

Ray, I found this one at MarksBugBarn.

Says it fits type 3 from 62-73. It's more than double the price of the others that fit the beetles from the same era. It's grant part number 79-4105.

Thats a bit odd...unless its like a universal kit wth various adaptors. I thought the two spoke early steering wheels were totally different on the type 3's compared to the late type 3's. The early type 3's had only turn signal lever on right and nothing on the left...and if they were not self canceling (can't remember) they had a different depth. The real problem is that you do not want any gaps between the bottom ring and the steering wheel. Ray

Nobody seems to know....so I guess I will just settle for the stock wheel.

I know who would know. The company that restores steering wheel....Koch's. They would know exactly what fits. I know late type 3 and 4 are the same. Notsure about theearly to late type 3. Ray

I know that none have the late small splines, like used on '74+ Beetles and early-mid watercooled cars.
