Can I use this gas filled steering damper?

Post by wshawn »

I ordered a replacement steering damper for my wifes bug and got sent the wrong one (wrong damper in the correct box if that makes sense).

Any way the damper I recieved is a Boge with this part number on it 1-0691-22-781-1

Granted it is an inch shorter, how much of the stock one used, is this a problem? It seems to have the same dimensions of holes at either end and looks like the top bit could be bent to shape relativly easy.

Doesn't matter too much as I can return it but it is a lot stiffer than than the stock one so... :?

You don't want to try bending it. Been there. It just breaks. The end is swaged or crimped on. Its only stiffer than the stock one because its new. They were all about the same. What is worth trying...is yes...first find out how much of the stroke is extra. Check this on your car.

Then...cut off the old damper tip from yours....and see if you can thread the end of the rod. It may destroy a die. It is induction hardened. If you can thread the rod......you can make an extender for the original tip and thread it on. Ray
