Parts interchangable ?
I am new to the Type 4 side of VW's. Is there interchangable parts list anywhere for reference? Type 3 to Type 4, etc.

I am looking at a 72' 411 wagon and was doing some research on what I am getting myself into. I have owned T-1 & T-3 before and currently have a 67 T-3 fastback so I understand the lack of repo/NLA parts. I have pictures but do not want to post them right now since I offically do not own the car.
A complete, unmolested FI car will be a change since about everything I have owned before has been hacked by the previous owners. I also do not know what to expect with it being a automatic.

The automatic is actually not bad. Most people think they are slugs because they get the automatic when it is basically old and in need of basic service.
At this age...I would for sure not drive it until the seals and gaskets between teh final drive and the automatic section are replaced. The life is 7 years or 70k miles. Its very easy once the transmission is out. When this seal fails...and it will...the tranny is toast.
While its out...you might just rebuild it. The parts are all out there. Do a search in this forum.
Also, getting the Bentley brown type 3 manual, a cheap set of gauges from someplace like harbor freight....and properly adjusting teh pressures will make it shift like factory again. Lastly...from what some say...find a vanagon torque converter. Drops right in and ups the stall point making it much quicker off the line.
Not to scare you away at all. These are THE best cars VW built (air cooled wise...IMHO). I have been a type 3 owner as well. Those are a close second. They are also much much easier to find parts for. There were a great deal more built.

Well I guess that answers my next question. The 411 I am looking at, according to the owner, has been sitting since 98. I think it could be a little longer (tag expired in 96). I was wondering if I would need to pull the trans and put seals it in since the odometer is showing 58,000. I am not sure if this is actual miles, it could be 158,000 but since it has been sitting since 96 it has a better chance of being actual. I was hoping to rework the brake system, change the fuel hoses, clean the gas tank and hit the road but I guess that won't work now.
What type of gauges do I need to look for?

Some good info I just found out about the seal kit. I ordered the K40900 seal kit from Dacco (dist for Precision) and I found out that for $3.00 more I can get the seal kit that also includes clutches for the 003. I do not think I will have to replace the clutches yet but I will have them when I do. So for others that are looking to buy this seal kit check and see how much the bigger overhaul kits are because it might be little difference in price.raygreenwood wrote:At this age...I would for sure not drive it until the seals and gaskets between teh final drive and the automatic section are replaced.

Well this is what I have found out so far on interchangable parts (some of you might already know this). Wheel cylinders and rubber brake hoses for the Type 411 are the same as the 1302/1303 super beetle. I found out you can still get Type 4 wheel cylinders but for me they were $16.00 more per side than the supers and ended being the same. Also the rear brake shoes are almost the same as a super. The only difference was the Type 4 shoes have a extra groove cut out in the shoe mounts. If you are in desperate need of brakes and can not find them you probably can use the shoes for a super and cut the groove yourself. I will list more stuff as I find it out.

The hatch will....but I beleive the early 411's and late 412's have different tail lights. But...I think the early 412's had teh same rear tail lights as the 411. This is two and four door sedans only. Also...obviously....four door and two door sedans have different rear fenders.
Only teh very early 411 rear hatches had very very slight differences...that you will never really be able to see. It took me a bout two years of looking at my spare hatch to figure out what was subtly just enough diffferent to mark it as early. You would have to see two next to each other to see it. Essentially they are the same. But they were made in different molds. Very suble line change here are there. They swap just fine. Ray
