STARTER?

Post by gumbybm »

Ok I put a 1974 412, 1800 in a 1976 camper with the original trans . It is realy hard starting rrrr rrrrr rrrrr starts. My last starter same thing then it hung up I crawled under and tapped with a hammer, started. So /I went in and bought a new starter and it sound like its not disingaging also. Do I need to shim the starter or use a different on

Thank you

The 76 bus 2L has a different (228mm) flywheel and starter.
Did you use the flywheel from the 2L or the 412?
The teeth is in a different position.

Can think of two options:

a) The bellhousing part on the bus transmission is a separate casting. You can replace that with the bellhousing casting from a 1975 or earlier 1800 or 1700 bus. (With 412 or 1800/earlier bus starter), think it is same as beetle type.

b) Use the 228mm flywheel from a 2L bus. Together with 2L bus starter.
