beetle trans in a '76?

Post by birddog1148 »

Can a type one trans be used in a '76 bus? What about a beetle motor? I dont know anything about buses.

Anything could be made to work, but this would be far from a bolt in and you would have a sluggish vehicle when you got done.

How good are you at fabrication? The T1 trans front mount, CV joint flange mounts and lack of hanger are just a few of the differences. To put a T1 in place of a T4 engine you will need the conversion cooling tin which is available in fiberglass for about $200. In the end you will have a weaker trans than the original 091, and pushing a 2,500 + pound box around with an engine designed for for a bug.

Do some searching on www.thesamba.com, the trans swap was recently discussed and there are pages of discussions/debates of T1 use in a T4 bus.

Well I am going to look at the bus now, the original idea was use the bus trans in my Baja, but then at to do with the rest with the rest of it?

The 002 (5.375 R&P) is probably better suited for your baja if you're planning an AC engine...Play with a gear ratio calculator and decide for yourself...

There's a kit on the market to put a Type I trans in a Bay'...I'm seriously looking at doing this.

I myself have run several Type I engines in my Bay' - none of them sluggish in my own vehicle with an 002 - how many Bays have you seen do 100 ;)

Looks like the kit in question to me;

Code: Select all

Type 1 Transmission Conversion Price: $400
Here's a conversion kit that will allow you to install your own type 1 trans into a bay window bus. We have done numerous 1968 to 1971 but not yet into a later model. I'm sure it can be done but more bracketry may be required.

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.
