412 Storage question

Post by 4Dozen »

Hi all, I have a 73' wagon. I'll be out of the area for the next 8 months and unable to spoil my new found love. She'll be living in a climate controled garage until I return. My question is; what steps should I take to ensure she'll start right back up? I didn't know if I should change the oil, add/remove gas, use jack stands? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Fill the tank and remove the negative battery wire. Then pump the tires good - like 50 psi.

That's it.

Eight months is not horrible. The most worrisome things are the tires flat-spotting. A year will do that I know for sure.
If you could take the weight off the tires, it would fix that problem. Fill the tank all the way up to the top. Put a quart of gas dryer in for a day or so before topping off. Put in gas stabilizer....available at most hardware stores. Disconnect the battery.
If its a humid area....and you are worried about rust getting on the cylinder walls.......once you get into the strorage unit....pull all four plugs. Turn the engine around so each piston reaches TDC. When its at TDC...pour into the plug hole enough Dexron III auto tranny fluid to fill the chamber to the spark plug hole. As you cycle the engine around by hand only....to get to each piston....it spreads the tranny oil all over the cylinders valves and rings. Screw the plugs back in and torque them.

This will prevent all rust. Tranny fluid is a great preservative. I store bearings in it.
When you get back...drain the oil and refill before starting. You will get a minute or two of smoke...but thats about it.
Disconnect the battery. Be prepared to check the water and charge it when you get back.
