The 86c is an awesome cam, specially on a 2,7ltr engine.

I would keep the 48 IDA's and not go bigger. Those 48 IDA's already support over 200 hp, which is where I think you could get with a 86c.
More porting is not neccesary, can even be detrimental for a good mixture. I had 220hp without welded ports and 46mm intake valve on a 2,7ltr, so bigger on ports is not needed I think therefore.

Better put your efforts towards a good exhaust system! There is a lot of hp to be had there on a type 4.

Dave I'm guessing your still using the car as a drag racing only car in the Emerald Isle :-) .
Make sure your machinist fits the seats with enough crush, air cooled heads are very different to water cooled because of the running temps and expansion (my machinist uses .011" . You also need to get them to check the heads haven't gone soft from over heating . There is a very good book by David Vizard on porting heads , he recommends port size about 80% of valve diameter . 40mm for your 50mm valves . There is also a good thread on here as well ,search" 2.0 914 head cutaway" on the Type4rum .
Wally is right , lots of HP in the exhaust , diameter ,length and timing pipes in the collector , at least 1 3/4 primaries , approx 30 in in length .

They look like Crower rods. An probably originally Chevy V-8 rods, with the X7 & X8 numbering.

What size are the piston pins ? Chevy rods come with .927" - 23.55mm pins originally.

And actually their not Chevy jrl's, their Buick 2.0" jrls, which is still a GM product, and what the bearings are for when you order them.
