Chenowth Explorer A-Arm Build

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Actually, its an 002, but yes its a stock starter and turns the Suby over with no issues.

Been working like crazy on her to get her ready for the upcoming season. Finished up the rear suspension and bump stops. Shoved the engine back 4.5" to get rid of the compound angles on the CV's. Front suspension is done besides limit straps. Dash and rear firewall mocked up. Brake plumbing in process. Gotta pull the tranny back out and have it rebuilt. Reverse makes noise and pops out once and a while. Then bolt it in, hook up the axles, plumb the cooling system and wire the car. Gonna be tight on time!

This was from a couple of weeks ago, before I buttoned up the rear, just wanted to show the CV angle at ride height.

Thanks guys, I am excited that is finally getting there!

Dev,
The plates worked out great. I ended up using heavy wall tubing on them instead of making them one piece with plating. With them assembled, they are a SOB to get the arms off!

Little more work fitting the dash. Now to figure out how to secure it and where to put the gauges and switches.

Just got the tranny back from rebuild. Looks like the noisy reverse should be fixed. Tomorrow I have a bit of welding to do for fuel pump/filter mounts and then I will put it back in!

Dev,
I would love to set up a Dumont or Glamis trip together! That sounds like alot of fun! Which one is closer or do you prefer more?

Here is the progress made today....
Mounted the fuel pump and filter and installed the tranny and CV axles. It reminded me how much I hate CV grease! :x

Imperial sand dunes works best for me. I usually camp on the opposite end of the dunes from Glamis, but that's negotiable.
I'd like to coordinate a meeting up of as many SFT members as possible at the dunes some time this season. That would be cool!

Sounds like a great plan! I would love to meet some of the guys! It would be great to dune with some of the awesome rides on this board!

As for me, we used to go to Dumont most of the time, since we were only 100 miles from there. However, now that we moved, GLamis is quite a bit closer. I enjoy the diversity of Glamis!
