Round air filter....Part number?

The fixed orifice is drastically better than the stock PCV. The pCV valve came on all injected 1.7's in 411/412 and 914.
It is a vacuum leak pure and simple....and it has no dedicated timing that is controlled by the ECU. It is a major fuel mixture upset any time it opens at low rpm. The only reason it is almost not noticable on the injected engines as they came from tha factory....is that the factory state of tune...as compared to what the D-jet is capable of when you fix this fluctuating vacuum leak....was abysmal.
People think its normal for D-jet to idle rich and have flat spots off the line . It is not.
The stock PCV is also responsible for a fair portion of the "bucking syndrome".....as it causes rapid flexing of the copper plate againts the WOT stop plug...giving untimed enrichments.
The flow through method that VW put into these is superb. littleelse beats it. It allows theheads to run at least 15* cooler from what I have found.
The filtered air comes from teh air cleaner, through teh flame trap splitter....through the rocker boxes where it draws oil mist back into the crankcase as well as gasses. It then is pulled through the crankacse...through the "Z" baffel....through the oil breather and PCV to the plenum. Thsi is a very high state of vacuum and airflow in general.
The oil speration method from the PCV gasses is superb. Ray

First off, I have to say 'thanks' for everyone sharing their knowledge with me. Thank you Albert, for your tips on finding type-4 parts.......Auto Atlanta does have the PCV valves in stock ($15 each).
I'm most surprised (pleasantly) on your findings, Ray, of the lower head temperatures with this crankcase ventilation system, and now realize the multiple benefits of keeping it.....along with the improvements. I almost thought of simplifying it, but have now opted not to.
Thanks for your tips, 'Wildthings,' on your ventilation tips for your van. I too own a type-4 powered Westfalia, and although the engine is out of it right now for a rebuild, I will take your suggestions into consideration for venting this crankcase as well. If you don't mind, send me an e-mail or PM sometime to explain this deeper for me. How about photos?

oh,,, bill,k,,, make attention with the filter ,,, bughouse sale one air filter , they said he fit for the 412 but i have one with me ( not from bughouse ) and the cover d,t close tite , and we have a air leak onder the cover ,,, look for that ,,, it is not expensive but if you want the original from bosh look in the ,,,,pellican porsche parts ,,,porsche 914 -70-73 ,,,1700 cc,, or you can look in ,,,autoattlenta,,, porsche parts ,,, for same model ,,, more expensive 20.$ but original to vw ,,,

I tried Pelican - NLA. AtlantaAuto shipped me a Napa Gold 6036 - wrong size. No luck other places as well.
Returning to K&N web site per Ray's suggestion, I found the "find by dimension" tool. My old filter measures about 3.22" tall on ID, 2.94" tall on OD. The triangular sectioned boss on the ID ends of the filter do the sealing (3.22"). The top filter housing has inside lip of 4.87" OD. E-3218 looks like the ticket - 3.25" tall with 4.875" ID.

One note, about what Albert is saying with the filter fit.
Many aftermarket filters...especially the Fram...have a rubber/plastisol ring on the top and bottom that is designed to crush down. It will not fit properly. The rubber is too hard. It not only leaves a gap around teh outside edge of the two plastic halves...it props them apart under too much tension. When the plastic gets hot....it will crack. Been there...done that.
Also be sure that any aftermarket filter you use is not too short. I have had some in the past that I had to build up about 1/8" with sheet rubber. The K&N is probably the answer. Ray

bill, i have on my 412-73 round air filter from mann pn ,, C2180,,he fit no.1,, look on ebay or samba , and look in the type3 on samba or porshe parts

Hey Bill (and the gang),
I bought a packaged lot of filters off of eBay last year, and I think there was nearly a dozen in the box. I will have a look later to confirm this. I'm pretty sure I'll never need this many....
Let me know how you make out with your other sources, and perhaps I can mail you one of these if you don't have any success.
