The I beams are bigger around the smallend and better for turbo. Show us some pics if/when you get them :?:
why do you say I beams are better for turbo ? (I beams are cheaper which is nice... :) ) but H beams are lighter and stronger... and supposedly almost indestructible...

H beam rods are better for high rpm
I beam rods are good upto 7500 rpm, I beams are stronger in compression, but weaker in tensille strenght

akciddento wrote:i talked with stateside tuning here in the uk and they say they did a set earlier in the year taking a scat 5.4 I beam and machining and rebushing... price seemed ok too... delivery time was a bit long tho... christmas gets in the way... doh!

will think about it over the weekend unless anyone has a better suggestion...
That would be my set they did earlier this year :D
They are fitted in the engine now but I haven't started it yet... I can say that the small end looked a bit "thin" compared to the stock rods, but on the other hand they only removed 2mm in diameter so I guess the design is just different. Also, I'm not expecting the engine to produce more than 120-130hp and it will be pushing my VERY light Buggy so I take it they will hold.

Here is a picture if you're wondering what they look like

aha !

that's the puppy !
after pricing things up in the UK & US and adding shipping, vat and import duty it looks like stateside will end up with my money...

i cant see what all the fuss is about :? just use the stock rod, and put some arp bolts in them, i would rather use a 20year old german part, than a brand new chinese part

and then use stateside for the machining.
you guys are of your rockers

its not allways that simple... my engine was already assembled when I realised the mistake I had made by reusing the stretch type bolts.
I didn't want to take it appart and have to wait for weeks before I got my machined stock rods back with VERY expensive ARP bolts.

   very thin...

OK.... marcotheturbosteamengine proved stock rods are strong enough 8)
Can these be installed in stock rods after machining?

well... no, or yes, but you need to machine the rods to take the thicker bolts plus have the big ends machined after fitting the bolts to ensure they are 100% in line, which is done by removing material on the big ends joint section. The big end is then machined to make it round again and voila. Sounds simple but its not and it is expensive, plus the ARP bolts are not cheap, specially if you have to buy them from the US and have them shipped to the UK.

I agree that having a stock set of rods is the best option... but I found it is almost as expensive as buying a brand new set like I did.

NO, those bolts will not fit, they are for rods that have the nut(threaded part) incorprated in the cap.
you need the arp nuts and bolts, that are designed for the stock type of rod.
these type of arp nut and bolt are designed to directly replace the stock ones, as long as the stock rods are not out of round before replacing the bolts, they dont need machiening afterwards.
good luck
marco mansi...

ps. you realy think $100 for a set of 4 new rods with new bolts, machiening! is going to be made in the USA? if you want rods that 100% usa made your looking at $700+ of 4.

arp part no is 104-6001............

Does anyone know what CARR bolts RIMCO puts in their "Super" T4 rods?
T1/WBX/T4==Same ARP bolt/nut set...

Also in a previous thread, SCAT will do this for you on I or H beams.

I'm still probably going to the ARP 3/8" BBC bolt/nuts.

Those are cheap as chips, and any machine shop should be able to install them.

If you want to go nutso, the ARP2000 BBC bolt sets usually go for ~$80 for 16...
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I Just bought a set of the ARP2000-Pro Wavelocs for BBC, $47 on EBAY.
(+$8 shipping) for 16 nuts/bolts/lube etc...

IIRC a set of stock replacement rod bolts cost more...
For 8 bolts and nuts.
