Battery, what's in your car?

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

I am using an Odyssey 925 dry cell I bought at McKenzie's... It is mounted in front of the front firewall on the passenger side (I made a sheet metal box up front by extending the front firewall forward).

Gell cell clone, gold with black top, refurbished battery. Brand unknown but definitely an optima knockoff. Paid $25 for it at a diesel truck/welding supply store and that was in 2001..........was still going strong when I shut the bug off in Nov 06.......
So you think your project is taking forever eh? Well you've got nothing on me.....

Remy Battery Company in Wisconsin sells the Optima Red Top that has side posts for around $100 including shipping on eBay. For shipping they put it on a heavy cardboard box filled with Urethane foam in a plastic bag that locks the battery in. I have these in all my vehicles VW and otherwise. They have the unique ability to drop below 5 vdc and can regain their charge. They can be mounted in any position with no ill-effects. The side post option is nice in any T-1 set up. I include a battery shut off switch on the positive battery cable that is produced by US General that offers a number of added features like security, fights battery drain and more. The Optima ends the famous struggle against battery pan cancer.

Currently running a little CAT batt (always need a jump if sits more than a couple of days). Used to have the biggest yellow bat from Wal-Hell in our last rail. Those are made by Johnson Controls and that batt took a hell of a beating and never failed.
Why bring a 17 year old post back from the dead? Well, I'll tell you why. The Red Top mentioned above just went into my son's old V-8 380 SL Mercedes. Spins that engine like a top. A 17 year old battery. Unbelievable.

I had one that was probably 10 years old, maybe older.

Supposedly, the new ones don't last very long.

My 2016 Transit work van has the original Motorcraft battery in it.

Probably won't start tomorrow morning!

I thought you just had to always park on top of a hill... there are hills in some parts of Oklahoma, I have seen them driving to make cash donations to the Indians.

Usually run Walmarts finest, they get a maintainer when not being driven regularly.
Had an unkillable Optima redtop for 15 years but when it came time to replace it everyone said Optimas were no longer worth the money. That was 20 years ago, I assume it's still the case?

Keeping an eye out for affordable drop-in lifepo4 units, they are close these days, and have been there if you need deep cycle...
Those should be good for many hundreds if not thousand++ cycles.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I also have a 15 year old optima red in my baja. I left my parking lights on for a month. Battery was 5 volts dead and done. I put my high frequency desulfator on it and blasted it with 60 amps at 18 volts for a few minutes. Then trickled charged it with the high freq and it is back almost as good as new lol.
