Funny you should ask:) I just bought a Chinese diesel air heater 8kw for 90 bucks brand new couldn't pass it up. I figured if the old bn4 ever died I would put this in my bug. I decided to test it out in my work area under my house and it works well. I have flooded it a few times and the exhaust clamping style is less than ideal but it does put out 160°f heat after 20 min of use. It takes a good 5-10 minutes to start putting out heat.
That's the nice thing about the ole gas heaters just run a tee off the tank. Both heaters are very fuel efficient which is nice. I love cranking on the old eberspacher and having my windows cleared up faster than new cars:)

I put an early bn4 in my bug and it works great! I did however have to modify the heater outlet to fit in the nose but well worth it for almost instant heat:)
That looks like an old Bus unit, was it originally 6v? And less on topic why is the diesel heater so slow to get upto temperature?
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.
It is a bus heater(bn4) it's an early 12v with the hardi fuel pump and separate fuel pressure regulator(pre metering pump with points under fan) I think its because it takes a higher temp for the diesel to burn. It takes about 2 minutes for the glow plug to get hot enough then the fuel pump slowly starts adding fuel. It will slowly start ramping up fan and fuel pump speed until the glow plug kicks off then it starts getting hot
