I left my original bearing in the crank and have had no problems.
I can also confirm a proper bosch starter using an ignition relay is man enough for a DJ engine although it won't spin up that fast.
One thing to watch out for is pressure plate clearance.
I have been running a 215mm sachs clutch with no problems but need to change it after a small oil leak last year.
The replacement was also sachs but this one fouled slightly on the lip where the clutch fork shaft is mounted.
I had to dremel it down a few mm's to gain clearance.
Had me confused as I had taken the heads off for a quick check and though I had left a washer in there or something

i also pretty shure u not have to remove the old pilot bearing in the crank
here's a pc og the long "Type4" input shaft.
in the front of the shaft u can see where the bearing has run on the shaft.
the new pilot bearing in the flywheel will come next to the original bearing in the crank and there's plenty of space for it.
the "type1" input shaft is same shape but a bit shorter on the tip.

Hi guys, checking in again.. Progress is slow (too much to do at work), but some progress has been made.

Got a 215 flywheel with bearing fitted in a way so that I could also keep the bearing in the engine. Also bought a new 215mm clutch and pressure plate, and a trowout bearing with sleeve.

But now, a question: What to do with the flywheel side outlets for the water? I am not using a heater in the car, so the right side outlet is not needed (at least not for this purpouse). Can I just plug this outlet with something? And what about the outlet on the left side, (green in the pic), what is this really for? Seems like cold water enters the engine behind the pump and hot exits through the short hose that goes to the thermostat, so I don't see what the reason is for the other outlet.

just route the outlets on both the heads in the front , back to the tank.

You must allow water flow out of the heads to prevent air pockets and also consider the pipe size to ensure an even flow from all the outlets.
