well the pistons are shot. Aluminum on the cylinder walls. One cylinder had a piece of wire in it and it was the high one! so apart it comes.

Oh well, take the opportunity to find some good 1.7L heads and have them rebuilt/opened up for 94s.
(The heads you have are very probably not worth rebuilding)
You may find the bottom end in great shape esp at that mileage, depends on the POs.
I would pull the rods (no need to split the case) and eyeball the cam/lifters (do not mix up lifters)
The the rod bearings look good, crank end play/cam/lifters chk good, I would NOT split the case.
The main bearings are in short supply right now anyway.
