Interesting. Could you post the VIN, or IM me with it? - I'd like to figure out approximately when the changeover occurred.

IIRC you can use the late (single-plate) retainer with dual plates by adding washers, so the way you're going would require grinding the pads down. I've got both styles in the "fleet" but it's dark out, I'll have a look tomorrow if I remember.
I was looking at them this afternoon and the plates look identical. The only difference I see is the spacers. I will know more tomorrow cause I found a set of spring plates, retainer plates, with the torsions for $30.00. I even think the bushings are good....lol, I will pick them up in the morning.
I guess the depth for the bushing could be different.......either way will know more tomorrow.
71 Ghia Coupe........For Sale
71 Super-Beetle Convertible.....returning to DD status
63 IH Scout 80 (beater)
I put that at an early September 1970 production date, like 5 or 6 weeks into the model year. I guess I saw so many `71 Supers that had single springplates that I quit looking and just assumed they were all like that, but apparently both Standards and Supers got the dual setup until the parts were used up. More likely they were instead diverted to the Type III line, every Type III I've seen (through `73) had dual springplates.
The VIN sticker on the B-pillar should show the month also.
OK, evidently they made quite a few more Standards than Supers, at least at the beginning of the model year. There's no breakdown by model in the production number sequence since Supers didn't get a unique VIN until the `73 model year; at least, if there is a breakdown somewhere I've never seen it.
