Re: NEW plan - 1600 TURBO qu re headers - what about 2 turbo
The crank is counterweighted (I think) and the bottom end is fully balanced. Ports, valves and springs are stock for now. We can fit ratio rockers down the track.
Yeah, I think we're going single turbo again. We'll be making some sort of manifold too. Won't worry about equal length.

Re: NEW plan - 1600 TURBO qu re headers?
Right, so I've been looking round on the web at header designs. I'm thinking...
- Unequal lengths
- Short primaries
Came across this design...
http://s855.photobucket.com/user/seann8 ... 3.jpg.html
http://s855.photobucket.com/user/seann8 ... 7.jpg.html
http://s855.photobucket.com/user/seann8 ... 1.jpg.html
All the primaries on this are WAYYYY too big for my car, but I like design. Just wondering about this...
He's got all runners merging into one at the turbo flange...Is that a must do?
Or can I merge the right side of the engine into one pipe and the left into another and then bring the two together at the flange? If I did 2 merges like that, would I need to go up a size in pipe, or stay the same size to keep velocity up?
If there's a thread that deals with this that I've missed, feel free to point me there.
P.s. Happy New Year!

Re: NEW plan - 1600 TURBO qu re headers?
Well, in the absence of answers, time, motivation and experience, I've bought one of these...
http://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDet ... Code=7301T
I know it's a bit big, but with everything I could muster down under, cost and the need for driver running sooner than later I went with this. It might be a little laggy, but hey, the car weighs 800kg. The oval is now up on stands with the 1200 out. It's getting the following things at the same time...
New fuel lines
New wiring loom
EFI converted tank
New trans
Still have to buy a few clutch bits, a turbo and an intercooler.

Re: NEW plan - 1600 TURBO + oval + downunder
Hi Pete,
I have similar exhaust but made out of stainless. I had the waste gate pipe in the same spot as yours, but had it removed and now placed where the pipes all merge together just before the turbo flange. Had been told that running it off the number 2 cylinder where it was would not allow good steady boost control as it only really allows pressure out from number 2 cylinder, leaving the other 3 exhaust pulses hitting the turbo.
Just a thought for you to consider and for others to comment
Keep the updates coming, Kev.

Cheers Kev. The wastegate will be blocked off anyway as I've got a turbo in mind with a built in wastegate.
The car's up on stands with the old motor out and now and lots of things to do yet. Of course my wife is keen for me to get it done asap. Lol.

Some pics...

Old motor out. Surprising how long this didn't take.

Be gone 1200 with rod knock!

The old judson setup (which worked fine) sold for silly money in just 4 hours on facebook! Not sad to see it go either. They kill engines in hot climates.

Old tank came out today after draining 25litres of fuel out of it. Stupid me filled it up about a week before I took it off the road. I'll be putting in an extra fuel line (for EFI) and maybe even replacing the stock one.

This tank is getting modded for an collection tank for EFI. Have to fix this first though...

Re: NEW plan - 1600 TURBO + oval + downunder
Been doing a fair bit of thinking and I've come up with a plan to add a little more volume and create a collection tank at the same time...

The first thing I need to do is cut the floor of the tank out and replace it. It's the most rust effected piece of the tank, so it has to go. Next up, I'm going to enclose the passengers side relief in the tank (where LHD cars would have their steering column run). By doing this, I can enclose lots of fuel. I'll drill a few holes in the tank floor in the relief to allow fuel in, but use the old tank wall as a large baffle. The stock metal is 1mm, so I'll be adding 1.5mm metal to the floor and new wall. The red rectangle you can see on the bottom right will be a piece of 3mm plate I'll weld (or screw) connectors onto. It's out of the way of steering gear and the like.

Hmm, your early tank looks a little trickier to split at the center seam like I was suggesting on the other thread. Still a possibility, but obviously you wont have any straight lines to work with
. I was lucky on mine with the simple rectangular mounting flange.
Good progress none the less!!

Re: NEW plan - 1600 TURBO + oval + downunder
The thing I would look into before going to far with the stock gas tank is a really good look at it and make sure that there are not a whole bunch more weak spots in it -- AND MAKE SURE THERE IS NO RUST AT ALL, rust is a killer on an EFI system/injectors -- I built a custom tank for my oval for about $100 in steel -- ordered a few parts for the filler from a race place and a couple of tabs so that it is still held in place at the stock locations -- and I put all the fittings I wanted, plus a couple more just for future expansion -- wish I had a picture to share with you -- --
I found an innercooler on ebay for cheap that was the 'right' size -- I used a water to air because they work better and smaller - used a small oil cooler for the radiator and a small tank and pump to finish off the system -- works great -- it is controlled by the EFI turns on when the engine goes onto boost and shuts off when the rpm returns below 2000

Re: NEW plan - 1600 TURBO + oval + downunder
Finally got out and got some steel today... interesting interaction with the guy at the steel place. Got the steel for next to nothing!

Then I bit the bullet and cut the bottom out of the tank.

I really glad I did. The good news is the top of the tank is really good considering how old it is and how long it's been sitting.

The bad news is, the bottom of the tank was exactly as I thought it might be. Awful.

Still, that's all gone and it's ready for more work. I have to say though, as I looked at it, it occurred to me I over-thinking it. I mean, with the bottom of the tank cut out, I can easily add a fuel bowl and weld some new steel in. Sure, there'll be no increase in volume, but it would be pretty easy.
Fiatdude; thanks for your insights. True all of them. I've found a way to get around rust in an older tank. POR15 makes a really good kit for it. It treats the old rust and seals the whole tank up preventing any pinholes or corrosion in the future. Also, I'm thinking while I've got it all cut open, I'll get it media-blasted inside and out. That should clean everything up. I'll just get them not to primer the inside so it doesn't mess with the POR15 treatment.
My plan for intercooler is pretty much what you said.

Pete,
here is a picture of my tank mod. Mainly a surge style tank but gives about an extra litre. I just made one out of cardbaord and stuck it on to make sure it cleared steering arms etc and then had it made in steel and welded on.

Here in SoCal we have high alcohol content gas, and I run E85 -- ALL OF Those coatings have given me more problems than rust -- I'd still recommend getting someone to build you a new tank and then put the old shell over it, If you need to hide it from the inspectors

There are gas tank sealants on the market that work fine with 100% alcohol race gas etc.
(methanol or ethanol)

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Fiatdude; POR15 tank treatment is alcohol resistant. Jay Leno had the guys from POR15 on his youtube channel the other day talking about it.

Here's what an alcohol resistant coating looked like in my prefilter in my Oval (it's down to >20% flow at this point) most of it was a very very fine powdery substance that you can barely see in the crevasses -- P.S. all the injectors were also clogged by this time too
