I think that's an overflow tank(1 inlet) not a header tank ? The header tank can be gotten from a scrap yard from any kind of car. Doesn't even have to be Vw or Subaru.

There's a difference between a header tank and an overflow/recovery tank.
overflow just catch the coolant from the system once it's overpressured then let's it suck back in once it cools down and is not under pressure.
Header tanks are pressurized and are fitted in cars where the radiator is lower than the engine, mainly euro cars.
Most Jap, American etc cars have a higher radiator with the cap ontop so don't need one.
With smaller header tanks if they only have small hose barbs they can be plumbed into the heater lines.

That sounds awful for bleeding though. but say i got a smaller header? i could plumb it into the heater loop?i dont think ive ever seen that done before but it sounds like a good idea to me. im taking every suggestion i can get for the water systems, but this seems like the easiest. ive been talking to my welder about doing a bigger header though like Joel's

the cap on the one i posted is a header tank. the cap is a pressure rated one. the size of the lines going in and out of the header tank will not matter how big or small they are. my header tank has a 1" outlet. ill try and dig up a pic of my header tank.

ok, well im going to find a small tank with smaller fittings to run with the heater lines. then i can just get an overflow bottle from the rad cap neck deal yeah?
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway- ... ,1840.html this one looks good. i think -8 is 1/2'' right? if i remember right the heater lines are 5/8'' so thats not too bad of a change and should work out? assuming i have to high spots in my hose to the radiator this should be a pretty easy fill-and-go system?i hope anyway. lol
