Oh man. Now I am discouraged. Retooling after you take over the business does not sound too good. Maybe it will be better later but that may be a long time. Not to mention the list of people who already requested one. Bob, is Fat Performance a company that sells through other shops. I checked out their website and it only had a few pics and no list of the stuff they make. Is there a distributor you know of that carries their centered fanshroud? Thanks for your help.

Jake, Did you guys ever do testing on the German Auto SACO conversion? I am just looking at all my options right now. Looks like DTM was superior to most kits. German Auto one does not look bad but doesn't look like you get much for your money. I have an external oil cooler, would that offset the cooling problems these kits might have?

I was going to ask about the SACO/German Auto shroud as well. I never knew they even made one until recently. Supposedly it uses the type 1 fan & Alt/gen just like the OPP one. Anyone here have experience with the SACO kit?

LB, FAT does not sell through retail outlets other than their location. They are an old and established race builder/supplier. No kids stuff. No fluff. Professional race products and services.
Best to call them for a catalog or go over there and take a look.
Do`nt worry about your external cooler. That will go with your old engine. The Type 4 cools just fine. Has a big cooler plus a greater volume. Is full flow from factory and has factory filter.
I think weve about exhausted this thread and would encourage beginning new threads for individual upcoming issues. That way future searches by subject will be more efficient. Good luck and keep posting. Bob Ingman

bolt on one of their exhaust to a TIV and you will wish you had never woke up that morning, just fought with one today!

Jake I went through that one a while back with their T-4 off-road pancake exhaust.What a fight.Too bad there isnt a better system available. A T-4 pancake in a rail is a down and dirty way to get quick power. Do`nt know if I`d do it again though.Good luck. Bob Ingman

Bob, I meant to ask you, why did you move away from the DTM upright T4?


PS I know I show up on the Thing forum a lot, and I don't own a Thing (yet....), sorry if it bothers anyone here, but I have been replacing Beetle parts with Thing parts on my bug for a better offroader, and this is the best place for information regarding Thing stuff. Thanks!

Why did I move away from the DTM? Well last year I used the DTM. It was fine. This year I wanted to do something to prove that it can be done. Not only did I save myself $500 but I can now swap engines from any bus quick and easy. I dont even have to jack the car up to clear the fanshroud. With the rear wheels on the ground the engine or engine and trans as a unit will come right out of there. I still have a rear mount for the T-4 engine. Still have the same 914 Bursch exhaust. The pancake even looks fairly factory in there with the stock aircleaner system in place. I removed the T-2 oil filler and added the 914 filler (above in the engine compartment) that I had left over from last yrs conversion.
The other engine was the best engine I ever had but someone made me a deal I could`nt refuse so he has it now . I can always say "Been there . Done that". Good luck. Bob Ingman

Jake I would love to get one of your engines. I went to your website and I was quickly discouraged. I am happy you have tons of business but waiting a year or more for an engine is tough. Maybe some day... :D
