It sounds like Semper fi will need to learn the meaning of the word "halle" (is the spelling correct?) meaning mainlander. I understand a favorite Christmas song over there is "Deck the Halls with B*lls of Halle's"....

Alohas,
You mean 'haole.' Its the Hawaiian word for white people. Literally means, without the breath of life. 'Ole' is a negating term as in " a'ole " which means "no." And 'ha' is the Hawaiian description of the permeating energy in the universe. It could also be called "mana." So, they see the English show up and 'take liberties' with their women, get drunk all the time, and tear apart the land and animals, and so the Hawaiians described Englishmen as people without a soul essentially.
Anyway, there's your linguistics lesson for the day. The whole "Kill Haole Day" thing was big back in the 50's, 60's & 70's, but its not so bad anymore. As long as you don't end up on the wrong side of the island.
I'm Haole and I've lived here for 3 years and haven't really had a problem. I guess it really depends on the person.
alohas,
Joel

Actually, I lived in Kailua for 12 years. One daughter is lawyer in Honolulu other is teacher in Kanehoe, both married to locals. Also have 2 brother in laws and 1 sister in law all married to locals. You are right Joel, never leave anything in your car even at state beach parks and trouble can be found if you look for it. It always cracked me up about the "haole" issue since Caucasions have been part of the islands longer than any other ethnic group excluding the native Hawaiians. It's uaually other ethnic groups who have a "haole" issue. My wife and her siblings went to Kahuku elementary school in the 50's and they were the only "haoles", she says that was exciting.
I went through the reconstruction crap back in the 70's when I put a 350 chevy in my landcruiser. You are right, a lot of red tape. I don't see a problem with my 181,it will be registered right off the ship. The reconstruction requirement has partially to do with proving that you didn't steal the parts that are modified. The other rational is safety. My local son in laws say no problem on the inspections, just need to know where and when to go if you know what mean Brah!

Alohas Semper Fi,
Well, you should have no problems at all down here then. I know exactly what you mean about the whole haole thing.
I never thought about recon being used to make sure that parts are not stolen. I can see the utility in that. However, it is a pain in the ass.
Good luck with your project!

Joel
