Hey The pistons are domed. How do you know the measurement for the head gasket? I measured the old ones. Is there a spec for it I couldnt find it. Well got the heads packed up and ready to go out somewhere just have to decide on a shop, lol! I toke the sensor and vent tube out. Thx Bill

Hey was checking the pistons and cylinders today and there is a scuffed area( 1" square) just below the last ring in the skirt of the top side of the piston. Does this mean that wrist pin sleeve is worn or the rod bearing or just caused by the rings being worn? Hey should the new wrist pin sleeves be bigger then the wrist pin when new? Do you have to hone them to size after you have them pressed in? Hey is the 412 motor more like a 914 motor or a bus motor? Thx Bill

I wouldthink if its on the top side, that its probably a wrist pin that was stcky. It could also have been motion from a collapased skirt. there should be either a measurement change to the piston skirt opposite this...or some marks on the other sideas well.
The 1.7L 411/412 engine is identical to the 914 1.7. It is pretty much identical to the bus 1.7 too...except for the compression. Ray

Hey checked out some of the lifters today and they look pretty good. I was wondering why the new ones have "C"Clips in the lifter and the old ones didnt? Two of the pushrod tubes have dents one a flat spot near the end taper and the other a sharp point in the middle area. Hope I can hammer them out. The pushrods are straight though. How much clearance do they need in the pushrod tube? Thx bill

If they have "C" clips...They are probably hydraulic...and are the wrong ones (that is...if you are running a solid lifter cam). If you can compress the guts of the lifters with a pushrod while pushing them down on a flat surface...they are hydraulic. Solid lifters are just that...solid. Do not bother with denting out the pushrod tubes. Good used ones can be had for just a couple bucks. By the way...a dented pushrod tube will also cause that shiny band of wear on the pushrods. Ray

Hey the lifters with the "c"clip don't move when I push on them. They look like the old ones except for the clips. Why else do they have clips in there? Already hammered the tubes out with a deep socket, lol. Bill

I rememeber reading about some lifters that may have been built with a machined insert on the inside. Possibly just assembled as two parts. But just to be sure, make sure you do not have steel pushrods. That would identify it as hydraulic. By the way...just get some new pushrod tubes from the junkyard. Denting them out rarely works well...even though it looks okay. They have to be round, concentric and the same length or they leak. Its just not worth,...not spending the $1 ea. you will spend at any yard or shop for those things. Ray
