<B> Hey Joe, you can help me get the Type 4 section going!!!!

I'll be glad to help you out with the Type 4 section. I'd like to have a Type IV section at both shows. It might be a good idea to use the August show to promote the October show.

Hey, Joe you going to go to North vs South at Darlington Raceway this sunday?

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to the North vs South show. My engine is still hangin' on the engine stand and the car is in the body shop getting a new coat of paint. If all goes well, I should be back on the road by Easter...hopefully!

Driving an aircooled VW definately has its advantages when it comes to encounters with the highway patrol. Back in my college days, I had my speedo pegged at 90 on highway 74 where it crosses I-95 when I got pulled over. The officer asked me if I knew how fast I was going and I said "about 70?" He told me there must be something wrong with his radar because it registered 98 (laughing). We both KNEW a bug can't get over 70...right? He told me the speed limit was 55, keep down the speed and have a good day...whew.

I got caught behind two tractor trailor trucks racing up a hill a few years ago. They were flying, going about 40mph, and taking up both lanes. I had just gotten back from a overseas tour in Germany and had shipped back a Karmann Ghia coupe that I bought from a local there. It had a motor built by some tuning company (according to the previous owner) and it had lots of top end. When one of the trucks passed the other and changed lanes, I went by them. I changed from 3rd to 4th at about 85mph - right about the time I passed an unmarked state trooper. Actually, I rattled the windows on his cruiser as I was running an unbaffled stinger. The expression when he pulled me over was priceless! He told me no one had ever passed him like that, much less in a VW. I told him I had just come from overseas, and that I wasn't used to police cars being any other color than green and white. He laughed, told me slow down, and sent me on my way.

i have been busted a few times but generaly get the feeling from the cops that bugs are harmless. I got my ear chewed of by a cop recently when he saw my home made very small front number plate, after a while when I told him the state issued ones look ugly he agreed with me and even made a suggestion to get some better plates issued by the registration authorities.

I got pulled over by a South Carolina State Trooper years back,...got me with radar as I crested a hill. When he had on the side of the road writing the ticket, he was surprised that my Bug would do 90mph, and that I should slow down 'cause I'd melt my engine for sure. Well, I took him around back and showed him my engine (had a 1776 w/ 40IDFS at that time) and his eyes bugged out, I assured him it would not melt down, and that if he had been able to clock me before I came over the hill he could have gotten me for 100mph.

He laughed, and gave me my ticket...he wrote it for the full amount (90mph) and they make you pay it right there or you go before the magistrate...I asked him about reciprocity between his state and mine...no problem he said, you pay for it, and they'll never know...I payed it.

So, if I speed, it's in MY town with MY cops (the perks of working in the FD), or it's way out of my state...although all states will have reciprocity soon enough (the evils of computers).

Anybody else ever gotten a Federal speeding ticket?

About 11-12 years ago, speeding on the grounds of Naval Air Station Moffett Field. (Also NASA/Ames Research Center, which is why I was there.) The fine was a whole $23, and somehow California DMV never found out about it.

I've been pulled over on base twice more--once by a rent-a-cop (the judge threw that one out), and the other time they gave me an "administrative citation". That's not a real ticket, so I didn't care.

That second time, I was busted in my 914 for going around a corner "faster than [the officer] liked". Uhhhh.... Riiiiiiight. It was at the speed limit, but faster than you liked, so you wrote me up? Whatever, as long as it isn't a real ticket.

Since we're exchanging stories, just finished putting in the 2332 cc. Leaving work turning onto a 2 lane divided highway punched in alittle causing the rear to fishtale a little....just a little. THe problem was that the dude who rebuilt the heads shortened the valve guides and overhoned them so she blew a little smoke. The oncoming officer hit his lights flew across the median in 5 oclock rush traffic (for Holland Michigan, anyway) to stop this rebel. He was the rudest most arrogant new county cop I have ever encountered. Carrying on about that I was lighting up the tires, etc. I even started it up for him to show that it was burning oil. I did a little researching as I was working for the county health dept and found out he had a reputation for his big head and mouth. The magistrate fortunately set him straight but it took some work. It seems that when ever I feel like rockin the bug there's a cop nearby....if it wasn't for bad luck.....

Ron,

You wouldn't happen to have the "GOBUGGO" 'vert in Holland? I am from St. Joe and have gone to the Holland Sam's club events. I have that 61' that I bought from Grand Haven.

It will now be recieving a fresh 2270cc T4 motor. Hopefully it will be running by the Sam's event this year...

Hey Ron, I understand that Jim Vourlitis is coming out this way to pick up his buggy sometime soon. Anything you need from out here? We can always send it via your personal FedEx courier back to Holland from So Cal.. :-)

The last time I was pulled over in my bug was on a Sunday morning coming home from the hardware store. Driving through an industrial area I crested a bridge and got the evil eye from the radar cop parked at the bottom of the bridge. He was faced the wrong way and had a donut in his hand so was a bit slow on the uptake of the "chase". "The Chase" consisted of me making a couple of turns and thru a couple of green lites before he was on me with his lites flashing.
This cop was upset about having to "run 2 red lites to catch me and did I know how fast I was going? Plus I saw that you have no front plate and that is the 1st thing I saw wrong about your car", the usual spiel. Then he asks what does this paper liscense plate with "CV" mean?
Well, Officer, It means collector vehicle and I am only issued one plate so that's why there is none on the front. His embarassment was starting to show and by then he noticed the big tires and low stance and the menacing idle.
He then mentioned that this bug didn't sound stock and was it fast? So I replied in my most courteous manner that if I didn't want him to catch me that he would still be looking for me.
Ended up he was a sort of gear head and liked the looks of my bug and wanted a look at the engine. OK. His jaw just about bounced off the ground when he saw the EFI system and the purple velocity stacks. And yes, I got away without a 45mph in a 30 ticket.

We mostly run off road stuff up this way and the wildest ride ive had had was on the old county road in the full bodied sand rail. Dan took a worked over fuel injected 6cyl porsche 3.2 and stuck it in the tube chassis for the spring hill climb. Front wheels would hang about two feet in the air through every gear and only touch down long enough to re aim and grab the next gear. Fourth gear wheelies at around a hundred. NEVER BEEN THROWN BACK IN A SEAT THAT HARD BEFORE OR SINCE. Had to take it out, to hard on driveline. The 2274 type one went back in but it wasnt much fun then. What a rush.

Dave Cormack,

Yah by now ole Fed Ex Man, also known as the Greek God should be in your area. There's lots of things I like to have from SoCal, mainly a house and some property out there. I'd move in an instant, all the wife has to do is think about it and we're there. But after the last school shooting she says, "See, that's where you want to live......I don't think so". Of course wasn't McVay from michigan? Whatever. Take good care of Jimbo. I'm afraid he's not going to return. Make sure he does, he's become a good friend in a short time.

I feel sorry for you guys. I am working for the the San Jose (CA) Police Department as a Mechanic. So getting pulled over is one thing but actually getting a ticket is another. As far as the Bug against the Crown Vic. goes, you would not believe how slow those Fords are until you take one out for yourself. They still have the 4 liter motor w/ some slight mods. The Chevy Caprice has the LT1, much faster than the POS Fords, but I will never turn on my VW!! But like they say, you can out run the car but not the radio.
