Matt,
That is not the one I was looking for... Here is the text from Bob's post.
"If you look back on earlier threads here you will find a post by myself entitled "Facts and Figures and Parts Interchange". That will link you to Hannos website where you will find detailed information concerning these matters as related to the international market."
Thanks

Mattt, Offroad Long wheel base, more room for beer, 6 doors, groovy...
There is a guy near you (like Saugus) who has a parts Thing ($300) that you could cut extra doors and center pan from. You could do the early Ghia front horn with link pin beam... add the extra door and floor section
It would be like those cool sliced and diced open frame sand buses we runn in San Felippe.. You could do a front and rear 944 disc brake conversion with 85 944 rear arms ( $250 for the parts) You can get parts from Larry's to extend the 944 arms for cheap. I am working on a prototype easy conversion to use the front 944 brakes on VW stock spindles. To use the link pin end with bigger converted arms. Do not widen the beam lengthen the stock arms work use thise big spindles and bush the shaft to accept the 944 rotors and mount those big calipers. Cheap and like boat anchors. On the rear just channel out the arms and leave all the parts outward stock.. You can convert to 930 or leave it stock T-4. You and I have chased this issue back and forth but I have measured and the 85 944 axles and CVs are bigger and flex more. Only 85 with the steel arms. After that thye went wiht aluminum arms for less weight adn epa bs better gas miles. Check out HP and Torque for 944 compared to VW Thing. It is obvious why these parts are so different. VW used Type 4 parts for the ass end of the Thing but they were not 944 T-4 parts they were more in the 914 range.. Once thye went to the front engine air cooled epa cheap white collar Porsche they used cheap with stuff that was killer for Thing use.. Think how cool a six door off-road Thing with modified stock parts would be. You could build it for like 3 grand... Not including motor...rims tires or the other stuff.... But if you had a T-4 2 liter and a bus 009.. remember that 5x 130 centerlines are around but only in wide. So live Bobs dream and run 8" on front and 12" on rear... I have yet to find a true set of offroad Centerlines that are 6 x 15 The easy way is to choke down 5 x205 rear 930 bearings CVS etc. and do the same up front adn the rim issue is a done deal.. More money for the parts but solves the rim issue. I am still holding out to find a pair of front true Centerlines that are like 6 x 15 5x130. I tried to get Centerline to make me a pair and they would not. I tried to buy a blank pair adn thye refused using liability as an excuse. I still continue to search for my front rims.. I realize that this message is lacking in political overtones and does not inquire about using dumb parts or offer anythingn for sale. But, I hope I will be forgiven.
What the heck. I just want to talk with others that are working on making the Thing into what our current technology has finally given the parts forward so i can live the dream. I waited 30 years for this and it will not be taken from me and wihtout the electronic goddess it would not be possible for me to succeeed. K-mann
