For an oil cooler I`d pull the engine but why for an alternator/ gen under normal conditions? Why? Tell me how dropping the engine half way is the answer. You either R&R the unit in place or you pull the engine to gain greater access. The big nut being put on with an air gun would be an exception but not something that one would do as a routine measure.
Do not be confused that you get some misinformation on the other list. It can happen anywhere can`t it? I saw your post on the other list but figure those guys do it their way there and we do it our way here. Just depends on which school you subscribe to.
I am not opposed to pulling an engine. In fact I am a bit proud of just how fast I can do it when needed but I need a reason. I might even pull an engine to do things a lot of guys would`nt. An example would be to install a helicoil in a plug hole or to change a heater box.
To be honest with you I think I would have been fired for incompetence if I had attempted to do that while working for the VW dealership. If there is a reason OK. I`m beginning to repeat myself now so just once again I will say its like pulling the beam to change a tire. Good luck. Bob Ingman
