Cool, thats what i was going to do. i thought of some kind of rolled lip might be nice, but im not sure if thats possible.
I am re painting the car anyways so i guess theres no worries about paint
I just got my decklid back from the bodyshop and the NACA duct looks beautiful. I tried taking a few pictures indoors this evening but my car is a dark colour and the flash casts some pretty ugly shadows. I'll have to move it outside in the daylight tomorrow if the weather is good and takes some pics then.
I purchased my NACA duct from Unlimited Products (part number PR-7). It is made from fibreglass and features a rectangular opening approximately 2" tall by 6" wide. I believe the duct that Plasticfantastic is talking about is made from plastic and incorporates one (or two) round 3" diameter outlet that is designed to be hooked up to 3" flexible hose. Each design has its advantages and disadvantages.
I bonded mine to the backside of my decklid using a two-part urethane structural adhesive and then blended the scoop in as best as I could with body filler. I had to use an epoxy-based resin in a few spots because the adhesive warns against applying polyester-based fillers (which most automotive ones are) and putties directly over-top. The pros at the bodyshop then did the final skin layer of filler/putty and worked their artistic magic to blend it in better than I ever could have. And of course they squirted the paint.
No screws. No pop rivets. All perfectly blended. Pics to follow...
Plasticfantastic wrote:I lightly sanded/rounded the edge being careful not to chip the paint (which I did anyway in a couple of small places ) and then used some gloss black enamel and a small model brush to paint the edge. My NACAs were the clear kind, I painted the backside of them gloss black too so the black edge to the opening helps the ducts to blend more
It'd probably be better to install the ducts before the paint, however, you can NEVER, EVER fault true inspiration and thought on something that looks as good as your panel. Nice work and good job to both of you
I know its not flush in the bodywork as you've talked about, but heres my '56 with plenty of ducting for the engine and oil cooler...
The below the roof-scoop is a double duct feeding the engine bay. The side scoops mounted in the side windows feeds air down to the remote oil cooler...
