With the exeption to aftermarket fuel injection, there really hasn't been anything new to the aircooled VW world in quite awhile. Both magazines were featuring Type IV and Euro car articles back when the Kafer Cup series started up. It was a short-lived trend that I hope sticks around this time. Type IVs are expesive to build and aftermarket companies have not seen enough demand to create the supply. One of my local suppliers loves to see me knowing he can finally get rid of some Type IV engine parts that have been collecting dust.
I like the tech stuff in the magazines personally, new products and how-to type stuff. HotRod ran an issue awhile back that featured tips sent in by the readers, between that issue and the input on this and other sites like this, there are lots of extremely bright people out there.
I thank the magazines and all of you for shared support, knowledge, and entertainment over the years in our common interest.

All good. And I think we can all agree that Ryan needs to send Kathy to Europe. This is a democracy, right?

Tom,
good catch. I do not subscribe at this time. As soon as there is some meet to them I'll subscribe. I did buy the issue w/ Kurt's 68 on the cover (who didn't?). I subscribe to HWVs and Excellence, and that is it.

You all have good comments about the Magazines and I am sure that Ryan will listen to each and every one of them.
That is how he makes it better, by listening to what the readers want.
You all want me to go over to Europe? Geez, trying to get rid of me already! Of course I wouldn't made going over to Europe for VW stuff, but I don't think that is going to happen!!!!!

And Jake Raby was right, we do not feature watercooled cars in our magazine anymore. Our readers didn't want to see it, so we are now a completely aircooled-only magazine.

I have to agree VW Trends is the only VW mag from the US I pick up anymore. HotVWs seems to be the same rehashed crap each issue. I'm sure it'd be great if I was building a Oval cal looker but I definitely am way more interested in the GermanLook VWs. All the cal look bugs look nice but it gets a little old after a while.
I'd love to see more home projects as well and am glad that the water cooled stuff has been dropped. I'd just skip past it anyway. More Type IV coverage would be great too. Even engine swaps from other cars too.

I personally like both HotVWs and VWTrends, but there are two Things I find lacking with VWTrends:
1) I buy a VW mag for 3 reasons, for tech articles, to see nice rides, and to see lots of ads. And HotVWs has a lot more psuedo catalogs. I like to browse the parts, and search for good deals. But maybe the lack of ads is related to my #2 or is this an editors choice.
2) If I walk into a 7-11 or a bookstore, I am more likely to see HotVWs than the 'Trends. And if they carry 'Trends then HotVWs is also sitting next to it.
Also I was thinking of writing an tech article, who would be the person to get in touch with?
Thanks,
Brian

Constructive criticism here.
My only complaint w/ VW Trends is it is too short. In the mid 90s I remember it being about as large as it is now, maybe larger. I can sit down at Hastings or B&N and read through it very quickly. It seems to take me maybe 1.5 times longer to read HVWs. I want lots of content and I'm willing to pay a buck more an issue or whatever.
The very best feature of your mag is the index. I HATE HVWs mixed up index with wacky names that make no sense for each section. The first thing in your mag I look to is the index page technical section. I read those first, and being able to find them quickly on the index is a nice feature.

Well, I'm guilty of being a current subscriber to Trends and HVWs. They do get a share of T4 stuff in there (Hot VWs has a 2979cc T4 buggy in there this month), and I like to see the occasional T3.
The things I can absolutely NOT stand are the myriad of editing errors and blatant spelling mistakes made in each magazine month after month. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not an english grammar wizard, but if it's hard to read, it takes something away from the content of the information. Granted, the budget for these magazines most likely pales in comparison to a "Car and Driver" (which I also subscribe to), but you have to really search for any mistakes in that mag.
I subscribe because I like to see what's out there. I like to see a good quality custom job, and more importantly see some that are actually built by the owner. They typically gloss over the fact that the owner is not the builder, and merely a check writer. I'd gladly give up some "show winning car" coverage to see someone who built his/her own ride, and maybe had a few runs in the paint (which they sprayed).
The trailer queens are nice, but not my bag. Fix the grammar/spelling and show more good home-built rides!
Later,
G

Hi, folks, it's me again. I am going to let Ryan handle most of this, but I do have two things to say. # 1- I have said before on this forum, to take both magazines, and go page by page, editorial page for editorial page, ad page for ad page, and tell me who has the most non-advertising pages in it. I think you might be in for a surprise. We don't have as many advertisers, true, and we get a lot of positive feedback about that, people don't have to wade through page after page of advertising to get to the "good stuff" This is one of the only times I have ever heard someone comment about not enough advertising. 2- Name me one other magazine that will have both editors ( and there are only two full-time people working for VWT) come on to a forum such as this, and explain stuff, when we have the time. I also think you folks are in for a pleasant surprise in another month or so, when you "just might"
see some Type 4 powered Euro Lookers in the magazine, and , "just maybe" a whole feature about them, what they are, how they developed, and maybe a feature on, let's say, maybe, a really nice dark blue Super Beetle Euro looker :=0

Dave, Ryan and Kathy,
Thanks for contributing and for the dedication to a great past time. Dave was right. How often do you see the editors of a big time mag talk to it's readers so freely. I, for one really appreciate it. I've corresponded with Dave on several occasions. It makes my day. By the way, Dave, Jimbo came over with Silver Streak the other day and tore through the trails by my house. He's as happy as can be. He's also all moved into his new house. We also "volunteered" him as a board member for our club. Keep up the good work people and I hope to meet all of you someday.

I have been informed. I have not compared actual content between the two magazines. I will request a subscription Tuesday for my 21st Birthday. This whole community is a lot of fun and I really enjoy it.

Any VW magazine motivates me to spend money. I'm always looking for ideas and especially enjoy the tech articles.
I lost interest in Hot VW's a long time ago. Unless you're heavily involved in drag racing or off road type stuff, I just think Hot VW's has a lot of "filler" to make the mag look thicker. A while back, I can remember Hot VW's mentioning Ivan "Ironman" Stewart in every issue. I also remember seeing a picture of his Toyota truck as well as an off road 55 Chevy...In a VW magazine...What's up with that?
VW Trends has more of the articles and features that appeal to me. I don't care how thick an issue or magazine is. The content is all I care about. As for the advertisements, I take them with a grain of salt. I usually know what I want, where I can get it and how much it costs. Anyone with a large advertising budget can produce an elaborate six or eight page ad. I'm also into Sportrucks. There's a company that advertises in the truck magazines that advertises under a half a dozen different names (same company). Their multi-page ads are extreamly elaborate and look great, but the quality of their products and services are the worst I've ever seen.
I second what Griznant said above. I have a lot of respect for the person that did most, if not all of their own work. Ever go to a car show and ask the owner how he lowered the front end and they give you that deer in the headlights look? I lost interest in car shows when I entered my car in a "Daily Driver" class and I was the only one who actually drove my car home...350 miles.
My point to all this rambling is VW Trends is more in touch with the average VW enthusiast. I had no idea the staff was so small.
Dave, Ryan and Kathy, I really appreciate your efforts. Please pass on my thanks to the remaining staff members and keep up the good work!
