Another 412 owner joins the fold
Just got a 1974 412. A/C - F/I - Auto. The body is in great shape, only surface rust. The motor was out but I have it and most all parts for it.
Questions and concerns:
1. If I remove body rubber [glass, fender, doors..] can I get new ones to put it back together with.
2. As noted above, motor is F/I. Friends tell me to scrap that and go carbs. Any recommendations?
3. Anyone know the source of an on line owners manual? I need to figure out how to put the battery in.
Many thanks.

I have arrived home............
Hi everyone - I am from South Africa - about 40clicks from the Kruger National Park.
I was concieved back in 1963 on a VW club weekend tour - my parents met at a VW club meeting where my father was a founder member, and my mother the proud new owner of a '58 Beetle.
One thing led to another and well, here I am.
Needless to say I was destined to be a VW fan, and was raised alongside the workbench upon which would be any of several air-cooled flat fours getting some lovin'...........
So back in about '79 my Dad bought a second-hand 411LE Variant to add to the '73 1600 Beetle, the '58 Beetle, a Golf or two, a 356 and the odd Audi.
This fine machine led me to acquiring my own first Type 4 in Cape Town years later, which was just a short-lived experiment in rust repair really, but it was a 412 LE Variant underneath the corrosion.
So in about '90, my mother rolled and wrecked her 411LE, and because my father was no longer around (he went to the great VW workshop in the sky in '86), she bought another 411 Variant........sticking with what she knew worked well.
Along the way she found a maroon 412LE Variant as well, as a parts car.
The years passed - and my mothers blindness got to where she can't drive anymore. I started another family too, and stated my intention to rebuild the Maroon 412 as a bigger car for my growing family. Again one thing led to another, so now I have a rusted 411 Variant running well, a not-so-rusted 412LE Variant engineless and looking like it will become the actual car I want, & a wrecked and rolled 411LE Variant. Somewhere in amongst all this is a car worth having.
Oh, I still have the '58 Beetle and the '73 Beetle too - but they are for another forum, aren't they?
And now I have found this place............................
Ain't life interesting???

Hi!
My name is Pirkka and I live in Lahti, Finland. I bought two 411 Variants about a year ago (cost 700 euros together) and I'm trying to restorate the yellow (72') one. Spares come from the red (71') one.

The red one is rotten from the bottoms of the a-posts and floors and the whole front end has been patched by the PO. I'm using everything I can from the red car to repair the yellow one. I have already replaced doors, hatches and fenders, which all were in good condition in the red one.
I've been reading this site ever since I bought the cars and it's been a huge help. Thank you guys for tons of great info!

Howdy everybody, My name's Lee. I've got a '74 412 2dr. I've also got a 63 singlecab, and an 1100 Virago. My wife has a 69 hardtop westy, and a 190-E. I found my 412 in Montgomery Alabama back in 97. I kept it for a couple years, then I had to sell it cause I needed the money. The dood I sold it to took the motor out to "rebuild" it. Then he left the motor just sitting outside on the ground. He ended up moving, the car was impounded, and the new tenants threw away all the "junk" that he had left behind in the backyard. I bought the car back from him, and paid for it to get out of the impound lot, and that's how I got my 412.
Peace, Lee

Howdy, guys,
I've lurked (and learned) on this forum for a few months and it's time to "out."
Name's Dave. I'm an airline pilot in Northern California. I've owned a '51 Split, 54 Vert, 66 Fastback, and a 912 -- all in previous lives.
Learning to fly behind Contenintals and Lycomings, I still fly P & W power -- nothing water-cooled.
I've always admired the T-4 (almost bought one new during the AirForce "poverty" days). I'd like get back in the game. I'm looking for a 411 Wagon. Nothing wrong with a 412, mind you, but I used to fly a CESSNA 411. I may have been the only pilot on the planet that loved it; as it was sort of a General Aviaton orphan at that time. See a pattern here?
Meanwhile, a special thanks to DeathBus, RayGreenwood, MGVWFan, Longbeach412, ubercrap, & albert for the free education!

Hi all.
My name is Dave, I love all VWs especially the odd ones. Once I work through a few glitches my 412 will be this years summer driver. My regular driver for the last few years has been a '67 Kombi that is due for restoration, I also have a couple single cabs, double cabs, beetles and type 3s all in line to be restored or at least reborn. My background is as an AutoBody technician, I now do web design (part time) and am looking to start a restoration shop.
I live in Edmonton Alberta Canada and run the website and a small forum for the local VW Club.

I am picking up my newtome 74 412 wagon on May 7th.

This will be my 1st type 4 as an owner, and the 3rd that I will have been assosiated with as a driver. the faded paint/woody dealer trim will make for an interesting looking ride!

Hey all,
Chip/aka vwcarnut here. I have been around vws for about 30 years & have never had a type 4 untill recently. Figured I would give it a try. Its an early euro 411 2dr coupe w/a 4speed, as I really like shifting gears. I picked this thing up for $250 & figure I will get it running & looking decent before I start to try & make it handle better & go faster.
Should be a challenge as its a unibody car and I have never owned a type 4..I'll be around for the duration as I have found myself really liking this car. Sorry if along the way I ask some questions that seem dumb/ignorant, but I haven't had ANY experience w/these at all so.....
thanks for putting up w/an old man!

Hello, let me wander in here
I've just (last Saturday) been given (for FREE) a black Type 46 with only 74,000 miles. Am I still chuffed?
It was sat unloved for 5 years, with all the moss and cob-webs to prove it. It was once a mates pride and joy, but too many 'next projects' got in the way.. A neighbour of his wants to sell his house so it had to go and he wanted me to 'do the VW honours'.
We pumped the tyres up, and it rolled freely, like it knew it's time was continuing. A Volvo 850 then towed it back to the lab. There was about 5-7 gallons of very stinky stale petrol to empty, the supply pipe in the bottom of the tank had to be removed and cleared as it was blocked solid, with a tar like sediment. The D-jet pump was also bunged up with this stuff, I polished up the roller vanes but the check valve in the return side was nearly solid, it was jambed closed, now it's jambed open.. the motor was siezed, but a shot of Plusgas, 12volts and a pair of pliers sorted that, new hose, filter and 12 hoseclips later I had new fuel moving. Every hose in the engine compartment was leaking, one by one. I replaced all them too. I pulled my Big Bosch silver battery off my Beetle and charged it right up. The starter was lazier than even me. So it came off, it was one of the short T1 style starters, so I replaced it with a longer motor off later a T2. After late Sunday afternoon, The W 1.7 D-jet runs superb, just gosta look at the key. I thought my T1 with L-jet was sweet??
It needs the front sub-frame dropping for some work, but does have Day Moulding front wings, (like my '03 Kab), 'suitable' alloy wheels (2 dead tyres), near perfect carpets/headliner, dent free gorgeous gloss black 2-pack paint (6yrs old), blacked-out side windows, lowered plenty (cut springs), 99.9% complete car!
It get's better, a 1.7l car tax exempt, free MOT (I'm the tester), classic insurance.. Should be back on the road for less money than 5 tanks of petrol. I might retire the Polo, depends on MPG.
I'm only a few days into it, but I'm massively impressed!!!
I've had a passion for T4 engines since the infamous VW motoring article, I've been gathering parts to build a Cali-style T4 for some 8years!!! now will get Megasquirt injection, I finally get one running and it only takes me a day!!!
The lad who gave it to me said it will take over from my Beetle. He was joking, right?

Matt, that car is the coolest. When you get it all fixed and polished, we'd love to see more pics of it. It looks like it's got a lot of potential! I'm glad to see you here, we always welcome a fresh face to our brotherhood!!
