you can just drop the exhaust and heater boxes. Pull the shroad and you have acccess to the cooler. I have never really seen cooler seals go bad, usually just the nuts come untorqued, use permatex on the seals when you put them on, you shouldnt have any problems. Now your cooler might have a hole in it. or oil coming from in between your cylinder and head (I have seen that also), or leaky pushrod tube.

Uber....you know, this is an ugly thought...but if the other gold one had "C" pillar disease.....perhaps that would be an interesting candidate for a simple roll cage system and a couple braces.....and cutting the roof off at the rear window....and adding a rabbit convertible top. I can measure mine and see ...but it should be pretty close. Cooool.! That case...C pillar and roof rot...is the only time I would suggest this. Ray

You know, I had this thought. I wasn't sure if I should bring it up though, didn't know how you'd feel about it. When I can get my procrastinating butt in gear and go get it, I'll post some pics of the rust. I got the hitch mostly installed on the new towbeast Crown Vic., but then I was driving around the other day and it started to overheat, I think the waterpump is bad (hopefully I didn't blow up the motor) It's at a good mechanic that just happened to be near where it broke down. I've got some air shocks for that bad boy too-should pull a trailer decently. As soon as I get it back up and going, I'll go get the the rusty gold one and the other from Alabama.

I got to thinking last night, if one were to want a real convertible top, then a SAAB 900 top might have the right type of shape...

Exactly what I was thinking...since I used to own a 900. Only reason I didn't suggest it right off..is that they are a bit more complex. But..I know where about 15 of them sit with tops whose hardware is complete...unrusted and unbent. I just installed a new top and headliner on my rabbit. A company called tops online...gave superb service. It was a factory repro top...exact vinyl, lining, stictching, perfect cut, all heat embossing and heat sealing. It fit like factory. The headliner was about $85...the top was about $165 or so. With overnight shipping...it came to about $325. Can't say enough about them.
Also...i had thought about using one of those long rag top kits for a type 3. You know...about 4' long.....low profile. That would be interesting and would only require a ring of say...2" pipe to be elded to the roof on the inside under the headliner for bracing. So if the C pillar is dent enough to de-rust and spotweld...but the top is trashed....cut most of it out and put in a rag top the size of a bus. Ray
