Looking good, David!

So with the help of my loving bride we started on the side panels. One is cutout the other tonight, then the hood and the roof rack. All must haves before the run. Tonight hopefully will drive it out of the garage to see what works and what needs some more loving.

The steering is still non power steering, guess need to look at another electrical unit. Went out in it with my son, got second gear and rear CV said not having any of this. I think it was from the axle, the end was mushroomed and wouldn’t let the cv full travel so it jammed it. Glad it was close to house so could pull it back.

So I ask why is the axle mushrooming?

Is the axle a smidge long at the mid stroke of the suspension travel?

I remember we were all discussing running clips or no clips on the axles a while back. Do you run clips or are you letting the axle slide down into the star?

I just replaced my axles and CV joints. The left side has always made some banging noise when the car gets loose. I had previously had the axles cut down and regrooved for the clip. Both sides mushroom though. Seems common. I had also repacked them while doing a wheel bearing before Mojave, I must have not clocked them quite right cause they were clicking on the trip. So, I found a new set of new Empi chromoly CVs on EBay for a deal and bought new axles as well. This time I had the machinist leave the axles a tad longer so they don’t hit the outer cup as hard. I paid a little more attention to clocking as well. Haven’t had it off road yet but the clicking is gone. My old 930s were still in really good shape but when putting the stars on my old axles they had some play in the splines. Don’t know if it was wear in the star or the axle splines but the new set up is quite a bit tighter. Anyway David, I have some spare 930s if you need one. Let me know.

I know the mushrooming is common. But I'd like to know why? Mine are perfect still on both ends. Like brand new still. I had a bit of clicking on one side before the Mojave Rd too. Just serviced them also and had to replace one. The outer on 1 cv looked like a rock went through it. I doubt that was the case but it had a pretty big chunk out of it. I have not drove mine yet to see if the clicking is gone.

I think it was from the old rail, I didn’t inspect good before reusing. I am running clips on all ends.

Resin I think it was from old one was I had to replace (and should of looked at axle) the tranny cv seal as it was beat to crap. The suspension setup this time is better, lots better.

Denny appreciate the offer but I’m using 924 cv’s and have a few left though I will need to purchase a couple more for backups as I just bought new axles for a spare.

The mushrooming has to come from contact with the cv cup, has to which means to me it is hitting under force repeatedly. I seemed to have more problems with the mushrooming when I wasn’t using clips.

I had a cv look like that, small gouge in it, no apparent reason, maybe inferior metal in that spot.

Only time I’ve had clicking was when I pushed the degree limit especially on turns.

The F’ing ugly road made parts of me click that weren’t supposed to.

My car has received some long overdue prep after that UGLY ROAD and others. Serviced all 8 shocks and it's pretty interesting how different the oil was for each of them. I run valving in the coilovers as well as the bypasses so all 8 are doing work. But the rear shocks see way more heat, mostly due to them not being in the airflow I bet. When we all stopped to make repairs and check our teeth fillings during THE UGLY ROAD, I could just barely keep my hands on the rear shocks for more then a second or two but the fronts were just warm to the touch.

I finally added some height to my jack, while I was at it I added a extension which I need to add a couple rods to make a saddle. Happy with it though as it will get the front end off the ground now.

Doing some work on the front end, angle of right wheel is 87* whereas the right side is 83*, you can visually see the difference so I’ll have to see how many washers to play with. .

When you have some spare time, practice with your MIG welder some more. Just sayin'... You may want to be careful side loading that extension. You did not get very much penetration to the floor jack cup from the looks of that.
