Really hard. Ring gap was 0.014-0.015". No spark plugs. It only started to be this hard once I added pistonsand cylinders. And I put a lot of oil during assembly. I'll try to make a lever to bolt in place of the pulley and give it a few spins. Now I stopped it at tdc, maybe that has something to do with it. It's so much eadier on a type1 with the big pulley bolt and a wrench/spanner.

I would have a hard time turning a motor by hand using the pulley or fan in the state you describe.
Turn it using the flywheel by hand - no problem, do it all the time.
(ring gear chews hands).


I use the flywheel by hand turning against springs, duals even, setting up geometry, and i'm no brute.
Not with plugs in, though.. no way.

I rushed to conclusions, engine turns properly. I installed two long bolts on the pulley to hub holes and used a long bar to turn it. It freed up right away. I think the problem was I left it at TDC, where it is a bit harder to start turning it. Now I can even turn it by the pulley with some effort.
I do not have access to the flywheel, it is mounted on a stand made out of a type2 gearbox bell housing.

As much as I wanted to start the engine last year, I was too lazy to paint the engine tins and finish it. Meanwhile I started the rebuild of the car (time for bodywork, paint and interior, the rest is good). However I made a small improvement to the ITBs, buying the rubber boots destined for a Yamaha ski jet or snowmobile (I think), SPI 07-100-15. I enlarged the mounting holes by 1mm eachh and now they fit really nice. And this way I can easily swap the complete FI to the type1 if needed.

Hi, the ITBs are off Honda VFR750, 2001 IIRC. I bought two sets for ~30$ each just to have two accelerator wheels, and they came with everything: injectors, sensors, rails etc. The rubber boots can be found on ebay, search for the code above. They are ~10$ each.
