Ok here’s some more update,,,I caved in and bought the CB performance Magna Spark dirt with wires and coil,,,now let me tell you I am not a fan of CB performance but since are VW suppliers are getting smaller and smaller each year we just don’t have a choice in the matter,,,,so I installed the Magna dist system and installed the biggest bushing it came with so it only had 18 degrees advance,,,first thing I noticed the car started faster,,,it idled smoother and I could lower the rpms at idle by about 100rpm I was happy,,, set timing at 18 deg,,,,drove the car still had death rattle at 10 lbs boost,,,then I removed the dist and locked it out as per CB instructions,,,,now I set the the timing locked out at 12 degs,,,test drove 15 lbs boost no problem,,,it idle great, started great,,,and it worked,,,major improvement compared to a 009 and blue coil....good job CB performance

Good to know ,thanks for the up-date

But you are locked out at 12°? I'd be adding timing and dropping boost. You'll probably gain more power, and decrease head temps.

Sorry I tried 18 degree and locked and only got 10 lbs boost,,,,,,I like boost and 15 lbs boost at 12 degree works for me.

Just for comparison......I run 24-25 degrees timing at 5000 rpm and 22-25 lbs boost.
12 degrees timing is pretty low.
When I was running lower boost and no intercooler I was around 18-20 degrees timing.
You are leaving a lot of power on the table with that much retard.

I hope not,,,,the problem was with 24 degree locked out I was only getting 5lbs boost then it would knock and ping,,,the more I retard the timing more boost,,,,at 18 degree locked out only 10lbs before it would knock and ping,,,,I tried everything with this engine,,,I tried race gas nope,,,installed a wideband and checked fuel mixture was on rich side still had problem.,,,,next thing is some Dyno time and play around with boost and timing will only tell the real story.

Could you not just add the MSD 6btm to your setup, unlock the CB dizzy and pull timing as you build boost?
(6btm...$484.00

)

Add a little more money and you have crank fired ignition along with an ECU that is Fuel injection capable along with all the benefits that come with that.
Logging your drives is worth the extra money alone.

First things in running a weber side draft carb,,,,no fuel injection,,,,I like the old school look,,,next thing I’m not a fan of MSD it has left me on the side of the road to many times or has failed at the drag strip.

To each their own........I spent two years with a carb.......while interesting, it wasn't really cheaper since I was always screwing with jetting trying to get rid of a lean spot or detonation. I even went to MS-1 ignition control after the 2nd week.
It just didn't satisfy my need for more boost........high intake temps require retarded timing....retarded timing takes away a LOT of horse power.
Old school doesn't mean squat for me in my quest for more hp......my new goal is 300 hp.
The one advantage with draw through is cooler intake temps....unfortunately no one has been able to log their IAT's to see what temp they are with a draw through. It would be interesting to compare...

This is true with the money you spend with jets and emulsion tube you could buy a fuel injection,,,it wasn’t a money issue it was a old school look and I built the custom intake and exhaust,,,,so this was some sick idea look in my head that I wanted to build,,,,anyone can buy some turbo fuel injection kit,,,but to build and make something with your two hands is something I enjoy and take some pride in it,,,I agree with you on the intake manifold temp how it gets ice cold which I use as a oil cooler,,,,it might not be pretty but it works.

I don't think any of us running efi on this forum bought a kit and bolted it on. As far as I know, everyone on here has done massive amounts of fab work to get the look we all wanted.
That said, if old school is what you want then that's cool and run with it. But also recognize that it will limit your ability to perform. Technology gives many of us a huge leg up. That doesn't mean that an old school build can't make big power, it just means that maybe you can't get away with the same things that a more techinlogically advanced setup can. You will probably need race gas to run the same boost and timing as some of us do on pump gas. If that works for you, then that's all that matters.

It’s true you can’t say anything bad about modern technology,,,fuel injection will always be better then a carburetor, drive ability, performance, and horsepower.
