They ran a homebuilt electric crawler at KoH this year. Used a leaf powetrain I believe and they set it up to swap battery packs at pit.
It will be a sad day when you don’t hear a screaming ecotech or LS in the desert but that’s long off. IMO the toys will be last to go electric. The reliability will be great though when it spills over into the off-road world. So many less moving parts. I would think the first step would be getting the fancy golf carts (razors, can-am) electrified since they aren’t far off from club cars lol
Based on what I/we have seen from the enviros and the crap they have been doing (well meaning but lying just like the other view does) and it took over 20 years for them to admit they were wrong and back off I think the off-road areas might be the first to be strongly limited (what they finally admitted to wanting to do was so stupid, selfish and childish it was scary!). Also, with all the damage done by the "you don't tell me what to do... I tell you" bunch in damaging the national parks like adding graffiti or cutting down stuff things might just go a bit faster than the rest of us are prepared for.
As far as the noise goes where we ride you can hear some vehicles out there miles away but then as fast as some of them go through the narrow trails through the trees, the screaming engine sound is a warning to move out of the way... quickly .
No... I think it is going to come quicker than we suspect which is why I brought up the subject in the first place... so we can prepare and get a-head of the changes assuming we can.
Good points man. I didn’t think about them cutting off the areas. That would make the transition much easier for them to force down our throats. I respectfully hope we are wrong and my kids will have the same luxuries I do.

Betcha they are having a tough time getting those EV’s going in Texas and Oklahoma.
Leather, I don't think it is just the EV's that are involved with the closing down of riding areas. This isn't just a far right or as some think a far left thing but just plain old selfishness of power and greed from all sides. If so it is so sad!

Just saying that Electrical is not the most reliable source.
I don't think either is the most reliable source either .
There's always someone running out of gas on the dunes or their system shuts down for any of a myriad of reasons. Then there is stupidity you can throw into the mix like someone going too fast and running into a tree or jumping and on landing so hard that the trans mount collapses swinging down to where the engine is dragging on the ground.
I sometimes think that the only thing that is consistent is stupidity . Gad, what a leader "stupidity" is (politics is not intended in that statement).
I suspect that electricity has been around billions of years before gas was created... just not tamed.
I originally saw information about this venture in an editorial in Hot VWs magazine. The editor was wondering if something like efuels could be the saving grace for the classic car hobby.
Thanks Chuckput, that was an interesting read albeit short. I had heard something like this but I also have heard "no" to it also. I have recently heard of some other off-shoots also...; maybe...; I don't know and so on.
I would suspect that there is going to be some kind of tradeoff of some sort to help both sides of the problem... maybe.
It is an interesting question/topic but something is going to be done... good or bad.
Keep the info coming so we can plan ahead for the changes required. The timeline I have heard isn't that far ahead either.
Pretty sure they killed that off. I think it’s awesome though. I’m not sure why people have any negative thoughts on electric cars. They are expensive still but everything is when it’s new. They don’t sound exciting but once you’ve gotten to ride in a Tesla you quickly forget about the engine sound because they are amazingly fast. So give me electric off-road if it keeps the deserts open and the hippies off my back. Would be nice to see all these manufacturers come out and start a desert racing class. Ford, Tesla, rivian, lordstown, all got trucks coming.
I run a glass buggy because I found out that can't drive or ride in rails w/o leaving a trail of a couple days of meals but on a rail it is the battery situation that is a curiosity for now. I have now seen 2 FG buggies and both of them are larger as in the video but still gas powered.
Ian Roussel has built one glass buggy powered by DC electricity but his is built using scrap materials. Again, one of the things that got me started on this.
We all know the amount of noise you hear while driving off road, well I know I have a lot and that doesn’t include the engine either. Imagine without engine noise? I would have to have a killer set of noise canceling headphones for sure.

I think you meant "no-noise" canceling headphones didn't you?
I also think there will still be a lot of noise out there. I still think you will still hear noise such as when you break something or run into something accompanied by the bad language that goes along with it... plus the laughing that goes along with it. Then there is the getting it back to camp or where you can load it on a trailer or in a trash dump.

Watching supercross lately is the little kids that normally ride 50s are riding electric little bikes for their races. Pretty cool, but I think the big limitation with the offroad scene, just like real world is still range. At least if you drive a Tesla there are charging stations everywhere. Not so much in the desert so you still need to run a generator to charge your batteries. And on 110 it takes a long time to charge, like 8 hours long. So you still burn fuel to get a charge.
They have an EV Class at the Pike's Peak Hill climb and they have to haul large, commercial generators up there to insure the EVs are fully charged prior to the start. I still think that for recreational EV vehicles like a buggy, the manufactures will need to develop an interchangeable battery pack similar to what is used in power tools to be usable and successful. You can bring 2 or 3 batteries and charge one while out driving. Yes, the use of a gas or diesel generator to charge your batteries does negate the green aspect of EVs, but there aren't too many options out there. It could be argued that a generator uses less fuel and emits less pollutants than many vehicles running off road currently.
