Yep...we are actually pretty much on the same page. I did catch that you are using an assymetrical strokelength . In reality...that is the big thing I think all type 4's need...stock or modified...is a larger volume master cylinder all around. I have been playing with installing a late bus master cylinder. The 21mm one. Either longer stroke on a 19mm or longerstroke and larger piston diameter would do well even with stock. The stock 19mm was just adequate. Ray

I thought 20/20mm was stock on the 412?

Finding a strong big-ish rear caliper with the handbrake lever embedded in it does not seem easy tho (I looked through 634 ebay listings of calipers yesterday... )
Unless s/body shows me the 944 part that Bill pictured fitted to the rear of a 412
Thanks for good information of your beetle setup!

I´m not sure if this helps you, but I´ve planned some of these calipers at the rear. They all have handbrake lever embedded and are used originally at the front... Here are the biggest nominees for the 412 rear disc brake calipers...

Citroen BX front calipers (50 mm cylinder) ->

Saab 900 front brakes until 1987 (double 54 mm cylinder, for vented rotors in turbo only)->

Subaru Leone front calipers (54 mm cylinder)->

Those are the girling and or Teves Audi 5000 rear calipers I used originally.

Actually...its been a while since I measured the stroke on the master cylinder. I thought it was closer to 30mm. I do know that the front and rear piston positions have identical stroke and volume on teh stock 19mm master cylinder. Ray

func412 wrote: Thats good idea. I must say I tried that too, but unfortunately the brake fluid lines are located between the caliper bolt section. If you move the calipers other side of the mounting flange, there is not enough space to attatch the brake lines.
Hmmm, is there any way to use a 90 degree fitting of some sort at the caliper where the lines attach and/or maybe notch the caliper mounting flange for clearance (possibly not a good idea)? Oh, well, I need to see when I get the calipers what exactly the clearance problems are... :?

Nice finds Func412! , but 50mm or more is way too much for the rear unless you use big 4-pot calipers at front...

Moi moi Func! I like the idea of using those calipers in the front. Now, the CB rear brakes may not be a bad ida, but I believe there is a guy in Sweden who was using rear Volvo calipers off an 850 I think. I will have to dig the magazine up.

Thats true.

I was thinking that 4x38mm calipers with BMW 302mm discs at the front would make good brake balance when using 1x54mm calipers with MB 262 mm discs at the rear? Let´s see what happens.

Moi moi!

CB brakes... Volvo 850 calipers. Tell me more about those setups! Thanks!

As soon as I get the information I will post it. Though, it's not a combination of CB parts and Volvo ones, but rather all Volvo parts.

What I´m worried about in this setup is the weight of the system. Maybe the porsche style combination woult be the best choice (the hub is between the disc and the wheel). There is no benefit to increase the weight of the brake system.

I´ve heard that Porsche 944 front calipers has also the same bolt pattern than late type 3 and all 411/412 (76 mm). Anyone tried that?

Here are two pictures from one Finnish guy's web pages of fitting 944 brakes to type 3 spindle.

There is also one way to make rear disc brake conversion, which doesn't increase the wheel gauge -> http://koti.mbnet.fi/ywa/jappe/tekniikk ... jarrut.htm

I´ll mention this BMW caliper swap here too FYI http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticle ... lipers.htm

Now the front end is complete... but I need new wheels before I can test this..

Soon I´m going to fit 285mm vented MB discs to rear for Subru Leone front calipers.

That looks like a sweet setup. How big are the pistons in the caliper?

The pistons are 4x38mm. The caliper is bolt on.

Does the caliper go any further onto the rotor/disk?
It looks like at the moment its only using 2/3 of the available rotor surface (?)
