Now we're getting somewhere...how about boring some 95 mm barrels for 96 mm pistons and assembling a 2200 ccm Wasserboxer with ported heads, small increase in valve diameter and a cam which comes alive at 2400 rpm and really pulls the Vanagon Westfalia out the hole it drops into while making the 3th to 4th gear shift. I don't want a crazy big displacement Wasser...I just want to show that those inline 4 conversion guys (TIICO for example) and the cross species Subaru conversion (gag!) schemes are unnecessary.
...my 2 cents

Well, the wbx uses the 24mm pins, (yes/no)?
John has flattop 96s pistons for T4s in 3 pin heights... (non custom)
If you offset grind the crank for chevy journals, which of the 4 or 5 non-custom rod lengths will work best? at , say, 80mm stroke...???
Time to work out a spreadsheet...

Hello-
Ok, so 96mm what about 97? too much? Ok for a NA engine fairly stock?
Always tryin' to push it, eh?
97mm would leave a ~1.5mm wall at the bottom, which is just a hair under what a 94mm T1 cylinder has. It *should* be okay, but I wouldn't place a sure bet on it.
What about pistons? the wbx has a large dish on the piston... So where to start?
Ah, that's right! The Wasser has a chamber that's somewhat of a mix between a wedge and a bowl-in-piston design (i.e. almost a bowl-in-piston, but just wedge-like enough to be able to use T1-like heads
.
That's going to cause a pain... to do it the right way, I doubt that the cheaply-available 96mm T4 stuff is going to work since the crowns are likely too thin to fit in the dish required.
Is it worth looking into machining some type 4 barrels to suit?? are they long enough?
The stock T4 barrels have a ~3.6" deck-to-deck height, and the case has a center-to-deck of about ~4.4". The Wasser case is about ~4.6", so I don't *think* length will be a problem. What I don't know is the head register size of the Wasser heads... stock 2.0 T4 is 105mm.
Take care,

Hi
You also need to keep in mind the correct relationship between the head and waterjacket.

What pistons would you use when you have overbored the cylinders?
also how much material would be left? Would this be enough to avoid distortion?
Also what rods would you use once the crank has been offset ground?
T1 chevy style rods?
sorry 'bout all q's just trying to get my head round it.

I still have these question that I asked early on. Can anyone point me right?

Rocker gear is type 1....
Pistons.. yeah!! thats what we are talking about still..... I had heard a porsche 911 piston is possible!!
Rods... whatever type 1 style you need to suit... but remember, wbx has 24mm small end and type1 is 22mm so you need to get the piston to match too...

on that 101.6 mm talked about earlier were the head chambers opened up to 101.6 as well? just wondering how far they can be opened up.

yes, on 101,6 the heads and case was opened up.
the 24 wrist pin is no problem, use T1 rods if you want 22 mm pin.

Hi Dyno soar
When I built my motor in 1988 I fitted some type 1 Berg 1.4 rockers, a few years ago a bent a pushrod and I fitted the stock rockers & pushrods while I got hold of some new pushrods, I couldnt believe how dead the motor felt without the 1.4s on. So if your looking for cheap bolton, go for the rockers.

Thanks for the advice.
I think that when I have my motor rebuilt it will definatly be an addition.
Will T1 cams work with the T5 wasser?
Also if T5 rods are 24mm small end and T1 22mm small end can the T1 small end be enlarged via machine to 24mm? This could solve the problem of matching conRods with the offset ground crank.
Is this possible?
learning.. or trying to

The Wasser rods are shorter than Type I.
You can get short H-beam rods, $$$
You can use any Type I cam, gotta love this motor....
1.4 Rockers need to be matched to a cam that is designed for ratio rockers...
You'll need to convert the lifter bores to Type I to go for an aggresive grind.
Basically Type IV lifters keep you in the Type IV power league.

Hi Marco,
You better get one out and measure it.

While I cannot say for the 76 mm stroke rod, the 69mm stroke (1,9 l. WBX) and the stock T1 rod are exactly the same length !
