Alternator removal.

As long as you stay below the maximum rotor speed, which is something like 10000 rpm for that alternator. Going over the max speed risks flinging the rotor windings apart, or the slip rings, or the bearings, or whatever is the limiting component. Do the math on the pulley diameters to figure out what engine crank speed corresponds to 10000 rpm, that's your upper limit. Since the redline for these engines is pretty low, like 5500 rpm (right Ray?), it shouldn't be too hard to stay below the alternator limiting speed.

Thanks for that, MG. I can check that out easily enough. By the way, did you hear that MG/Rover declared bankruptcy late last week? Closing down all over the world, out here too. One of my other cars is a '70 round-nose Mini, with 1275cc mill, discs on the front and I installed an electric fan controlled from the dash. Still wondering if I should go ahead and swop the SU carb for the twin-choke Weber I got or not..................

Yeah, I heard about MG Rover, it's a damn shame. I had hopes we'd see MG ZT-T's and new TF's here in the Colonies. They were the last real British car company, now it's just GM (Vauxhaul), Ford (Ford UK, Land Rover, Jaguar), VW (Bentley), and BMW (Rolls, new Mini). Hopefully it won't put a crimp in our parts supplies.
Keep the SU's, they match the BMC "A" series engine in your Mini perfectly. I've never seen anyone who knows anything about British cars happy with his MG (B or Midget) after retrofitting a Weber.
I've still got the twin SU HS4's in my B. I'm tempted to try them in my 412...but the Bosch D-Jet is perfectly matched to the engine, so why bother?

alternator removal
hi,fans, i , do a alter. job tonight on my 412 wagon 73 and i find best solution for to remove , you save time , risk to break the bolt in the head , you remove muffler ,heat protector for mufler ,oil gage boots , oil filler boots ,steel air duck, from smal fan , not big fan boots, fan belt cover and alt. bolts, and you have alt in the face very simple , for more room you can remove flat head screw(appx 6 ) for head cover plate , ops one thing more make attention for alternator air boots only remove clip on alt. very simple,, albert

AHA!!! It has arrived!!
The smaller dia pulley I found was way too small - we would have been looking at about 15000 rpm with the motor at full chat!!!
So I had a new pulley machined from steel, a faithful copy of the original. It fits the shaft well, so this weekend will see it getting installed.
Its taken long enough!

Well done Wallace! Glad to hear.
Hey, I'd like to see that Mini sometime. Sounds like a great little buzz bomb to scare the rice rocket drivers with

alternator
hallo,M.G if your alternator restoration is not finish now , i have suggestion for you , for to instal new rubber insulator on the big + red wire inside the alt.cover , some time ,the insulator burn and make short-circuit with the steell cover , you can change the hold insulator,,, by( hold 90 degrées rubber from your old spark plug wire ) if you d,t, have 90 degrées on your 412 distributor you can use golf or audi old distributor wire , remoove ,électric wire , plastic plug- in, from inside the rubber and you keep only rubber insulator , you cut only good dimention for to make same look, on old 412 insulator ,and you push the red wire inside the new insulator and now you have very good and long life insulator ,,,albert

hi, M.G. if you look for a small flexible ruber hose for oil deepstik gage ,dimention 1/4 on one side by 1/2 inchs by 2inchs1/2 long you can use the same flexible rubber on the old sparck plug wire , same job for alternator insulator , for me before i restore my 412 alternator , the brake and alt. light came on and now she is off , and the wire are not mix , but i d,t, know the relation on this two light may be question for ray ???? albert

I thought I ought to let you all know that all is well in the land of battery charging and Type 4's - perfect!!
Spent last weekend at a music festival out in the boondocks and whilst most people were toughing it out in little tents on hard cold ground, with small rocks digging into their hipbones and teeth chattering like so many side drummers in a marching band, I and my sweet young thing were cosy as toast on a matress under duvets and blankets in the back of the wagon, listening to the radio and doing other things.....(yes, it can be done in the back of a wagon!!)
Got a little hot after a while, in fact!
Woke in the morning to misty windows and coffee brewed on the top of a wooden box which fits in the bonnet and contains what amounts to a small field kitchen.
We slept fine and woke up still friends, which is a little more than I can say for some of the other couples who camped there!!!
Now to get a new exhaust made for the machine........................
EDIT: I have been away from here awhile and am again amazed at how much good dope is available here - info dope, not Swazi dope; and though I was not intending to be here for more than five minutes, look at the time - 2 hours later!!!!!!!
I love this place.................
