STF GTG-Elko to Bodie Adventure October 6-10 2016

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

In relation to the various comments in the videos and posts above about it being cold at times, in consideration of those who have not been out in the wilds of Nevada and such who might well think of it as hot desert where this trip has passed, I feel a little explanation is called for here.

The elevation at Bodie is 8,379'. It looks like plain old lowland desert, but it's quite high up. The name of the state, "Nevada", is Spanish and means "Snowy". As the Park Service explains it on some of the signs in Bodie, the place has harsh winters with snow as much as 20' (we're not talking about drifts, we mean on level ground - I've seen that on ski trips nearby), winds up to 100mph, and temps as low as -40°F.

The week of this excursion, Monday and Tuesday had snowfall forecast for Bodie, and again for this weekend after the group had visited. Pat and I stayed at Willow Springs Motel/RV park on Highway 395 near Bridgeport, CA. We were about 12 miles away from Bodie. The elevation there is down at 6,800'. That place and all the Forest Service and BLM campgrounds in the area closed for the season Monday 10/12 as the group was arriving back at Elko, NV due to the norm for weather in the area at this time of year being harsh winter storms coming on.

Day 2 of the EBA, Friday, 10/7 dawned at Willow Springs at 16°F. So the comments about it being "cold" really do mean COLD.

Good insight, Dusty. It certainly felt cold until I refreshed myself on winter camping habits.

Day 4 was an awesome day. Trying to trim it down as much as possible... I got about 4 hours of video trimmed into an hour or so, but having trouble compiling it.

I will probably get away with a day 4 part 1 and 2. We will know soon.

Sorry for the ads in the videos. I normally turn those off for the first few months, but the music copyrights are placing them.

Part 2 of Day 4 now active, I think. It plays but is doing some interesting things.

Yup, Copyright issues with the music. That sucks, part 2 really brought a log of subtle references from earlier videos together, I thought. If I can find the section that it's complaining about I will cut it out, but otherwise it's DVD only which is probably better anyway due to some of the stories being told.

edit-- okay, it's fixable. Youtube is working on a coarse edit now and I have a more elegant edit locally that I may upload depending on the results of the youtube slash fest. If I do upload it will be on another channel because I don't want to risk another demerit on my main channel.

This will be our cover photo... I think it has a little of everything... Plenty of Nowhere, non-sensical acts, 2x4's and 4x4's.

Thanks Dusty, that was good insight. I'm working on finishing the rest of my story, just had some poop hit the fan over the last few days that I am dealing with. I took good notes each night, though.

Having said that, I haven't watched beyond Tim's second vid because I don't want to be biased!

Next episode will take some time. Not only do I have fatherhood to enjoy, but I will also try diligently to capture the essence of the coolest off road driving trails that I have EVER seen. I even threatened to never leave. Richard was on board, too, I think.
That was one of the best roads/ washes i have ever been on. Camping there for a few days would be a blast.
On day 3 i drove Ed's car from camp to Bodie and it included this section. It was a treat for sure.

I was just previewing Day 5 video thinking it would be an easy end to the series, but NO! Holeeee ShlT! Can we say Powder Day? Do desert folks understand Powder Days? Well, After Day 5 they will. Yesterday was Navigator's day, but Today it's Driver's Day! WeeHaw!
