Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

This guy was getting completely out of the sandrail world so I drove 100 miles to pick up this 002 and as I was about to leave he handed me the solid mounts and said I could have them since he's never going to use them. I got all of that for 220 bucks! WOO!

Jet Doctors are basically snorkels for the idle circuits.
Unfortunately they have their own issues.

A hard rain will also fill up the float bowls and idle circuits with water for the same reason (and flush crap through the gauze filters), Meat loaf pans make great rain hats, I swore by Baker Secret loaf pans for years.

The grease and rain hats solved 95% of the headaches I had with IDFs in heavy DD usage.

zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

The guy I got mine 40 Dels from ran them on the street and when I got them he told me about the left carb having the tendency to crap up which is why he was selling them (a very good price too if I may add). I run gause filters greased on top and on the bottom with outerwares over them and they still plug in one of the air tubes in the casting. When they run, they run great but then the frustration comes in at regular time periods. I have tried storing the car with the carbs run dry and with them full and it doesn't seem to make a difference; it is always in the air flow part of the circuit not the fuel part of the circuit.

I haven't been able to justify FI... yet! :roll:

I won't argue the merits of a full EMS over carbs/distributor, each has it's own strengths, mainly that carbs/distributors are certainly (usually) easier to fix in the middle of nowhere, Tx.
OTOH they are IMHO far more likely to need some help, if the EMS was built/installed right.

I suspect you have a leak past the filters (air cleaner>carb gasket?), somewhere. I despise gauze filters in general, as on their best days they only stop rocks.

AFAICT the best performing filters (as actual filters) are the AMSOIL washable synthetic media jobs, they used to make a "weber" size, but don't seem to when I wanted to buy a pair. Have nice soft foam rubber seals that work, too.

K&Ns supposed airflow "advantages" are marketing BS, you are not dropping any significant pressure across any properly sized filter that's even halfway decent at real airflow values an actual engine can generate.

Uni makes great filters, too, not just outerwears. Stops a lot more than rocks, comparable filtration to the AMSOILs.

I just sent off the order for the drive flanges and shift shaft coupler so they should be here in a week or less hopefully and by that point I should be able to get new axles and Bolt everything up. Yesterday I got the engine dropped and everything disconnected and today I got the axles off and the transmission out of the car. I also got the old solid mounts out and the new mounts in. Does anybody have a picture or know where to cut the hole in the body for the trans to come through at?

with that mount your shift rod is going to be above the tunnel.

just kidding, step 1 is not necessary!


here is the best photo of my install... you can see the shift shaft above the tunnel. i used the stock shift shaft, straightened it and welded an adjustable end on it and used the "early" style coupler to mate it to my 002...

i cut a 8 x 10 (approx) hole in the vw sheetmetal and fabbed a removable cover out of some ghia sheetmetal. if you look closely you can see it.

i also bought a empi shift box which i welded on top of the tunnel in the stock shifter location. i fabbed a plate to cover the old hole before welding the shift box in place. if you have any questions, pm me you phone number and i'll call you...........collect!

One on the right that is..... Shift rod will go right down the tunnel and no crazy sloppy linkage :lol:

Seriously...I don't have any experience with the style you linked....they just always looked like they might give a guy fits...maybe not though. Those are why I was going to do a 10* mount to keep from using one of those block linkage dealios.
