Re: Who are You ?
I better throw in too.
I am 58 years young, married to the same gorgeous woman for the past 33+ years. I am a high school Special Education teacher in Calexico, California. I was born in Southern California but lived in the mid-west for 18 years partially because I joined the Air Force and worked under the plains of Kansas as a guidance and electronics specialist on Titan II ICBMs. We moved to the Imperial Valley 20 years ago and we love it!! With such easy access to the desert I began thinking about a toy. I owned a '63 VW Bus while in high school that I cut my teeth on wrenching on VWs. I have also owned a '76 Westphalia. I went a good long time without a VW in my garage, but I was always thinking and dreaming about them through various magazines. My current ride (Chuck's Baja Build) started life as a fiberglass buggy on a full size '69 pan with a 1500 SP engine. As I began working on it a snowball appeared and started rolling. Before long it ballooned out of control - '67 body, full roll cage, 091 bus box, 2500 Type IV engine (w/ Porsche fan shroud),and on and on. We are making a big push on it right now because a group of friends are planning an 80 mile trail ride on Nov. 22. Crossing my fingers.

I'm johnL. I'm 45 and have been married for 24 years. I'm the co-founder of Super Beetles Only! although I dropped out of the hobby for ten years and only came back at the beginning of 2014. I'm a biologist by education, but work as a pathology assistant and lab tech. I currently have 2 '74 Super Beetles, one of which is being built as my 15 year old middle son's first car. I'm building my car as a pseudo German Look, while my son is doing a modified resto-cal. Both cars will be getting Subaru mills.

Went into public utilities, water and sewer and retired from there. Right now I'm working with my long time bud building hot rods and flipping cars and trucks for fun. Have a 71 SB vert that needs a lot of rust repair and a 71 Ghia that's going to be a DD eventually, and I'm into old IH junk-iron too.

Re: Who are You ?
I'm Alex, I am 24, mechanical engineer specializing turbo-machinery repair. I'm a gear head, have been into boat racing, drag racing, forced induction engines, and fabrication for a long time. My buddy bought a baja bug of craigslist and I helped him fix it up - drove it once and knew I had to have one.
picked up a junky one with some spare parts and let the sparks fly! trying to get it together and on the road, thinking about racing it in the future but for now it's just a toy.
I'm sure I can add some good info here about fabrication/design/suspension/engines, but the VW stuff is rather new so i'll be learning as well.

I,m Jon the from AZ. I've been on this site for years but never posted a tread. I'm in my 7th year on a baja project and I think I'm finally on the downhill side. It's not so much that took 7 years to build but I get very side tracked. I'll figure out how to post some picks and start a build tread soon.

Good to see some new guys coming in. Make yourselves at home, ask questions, give advice when you can. This is a great place to hang out in. Our only problem is we have no problem spending your money or maxing your plastic out, that's just how we roll.
az66ss, what part of Az are you in?

Re: Who are You ?
Welcome to the newcomers. Post often and include pics if you can. You will find it is easier than typing 1000 words. Also it makes more impact on a thread if you can include them. It may be a little frustrating at first but well worth it once you figure out how.
If you feel you are picking up speed you may be going downhill.

Re: Who are You ?
Welcome Travis. You will like it better here then the Samba, I know I do. Feel free to start a thread on your car and ask away on the questions. If you do not own Jeff Hibbards book "Baja Bugs and Buggies" get one and read it cover to cover, front to back and back to front. Its old and out dated but so are air cooled VW's and so are most of us around here. It will give you the basics and most of that has not changed much. While there are some guys around here that are building cars that are way beyond a basic baja and some of the info in that book that was geared towards racing back in the 80's is out dated. The basics of how these cars work, and how to build ones that you can drive daily and play with on the weekend, is well covered in that book.
