GREAT SUCCESS!!!

... well kind of. So I had access to our dyno today and decided to see where the car was at with the new engine / turbo setup. I had ordered a manual boost controller from Amazon earlier in the week with an arrival date of yesterday. Sadly, boost controller was a no-show but I pressed on. I figured I can at least run the car on low boost, strait wastegate (5-6 psi) just to get a bench mark.

After a few hours of tweeking my tune (more fuel, and few degrees of timing) and this was the result...

Image

Keep in mind, this is only 5 psi of boost pressure and plan to run 8-10 psi when my controller shows up.

My goal for this build was around 100-110 whp and looks like I should reach that no problem! Heck, with an intercooler and a little more boost I might even see 120+whp. The limiting factor is going to be my fuel injectors (185cc).

Added Bonus:
We happen to have a set of car scales where i work. Decided to see what the weight of the car is. Here is the result...

This means I'll have over a 100 whp with less than a ton to push. Should make for some fun motoring!

Very nice congratulations! When I first added my manual boost controller it was way better. For whatever reason it actually started building boost earlier. I think my wastegate was creeping open real early without it. I hope you get back on the dyno soon with the MBC and see where your at then!

Man, I had 107hp in my blue bug on a 1641 and loved it. It did everything I wanted it to do.

You will enjoy it!

This weekend I decided to make a new Down-pipe for my turbo set-up. The original one I made was meant for fitment, the new one was built for flow. I also added an additional wide-band bung for when I dyno tune the car. I also welded some of the mounting bolts as permanent studs to ease installation. The end of the new pipe is flared so I can make a "muffler" insert or add to the system at some point in time.

Yes, I know my welds are poop.

Im sure you are aware of this but if you ever run a full-time o2 sensor youll need to relocate that bung, might run into issues with moisture collecting in the sensor and fouling it

That location was chosen out of sheer convenience. It'll only be used when the car is on the dyno (hence the block-off plug). The sensor that the engine management uses is in the header collector and positioned at 90*.

I ran mine in almost that same location for nearly 2 years and didn't have any trouble.

Engine management is seeing a sensor mounted before the turbo? I strongly advise against that. Back pressure messes with sensor readings. Any good wideband system that is designed to measure before the turbo also puts a back pressure sensor in the exhaust and compensates for that pressure before sending a reading to the ecu. Use the bung after the turbo. Just make sure its locating the sensor in the 10-2 o'clock position.

Yes but yours is located at the 10 o'clock position whereas his seems to be more at 4 or 5 where moisture will collect easier.

I disagree. If moisture is blowing out, on mine it would blow right on it. His appears to head straight down so it should be out of the line of fire, and not much chance of pooling anyway, especially when it is pointed downward.

Yup, I was thinking the same thing.

Update:
I am almost done putting the car back together (for the 100th time). Only thing I am missing is a charge pipe hose (in route from Amazon) that will connect the intercooler to the throttle body.

I DID however get the engine started. Replacing the injectors with larger ones means I'll have to re-tune it. Hopefully now I can achieve the 130-150hp I trying to get to.

Looking good! Should be a fun ride once you get it together!

Did you get your water methanal set up?

Also did you finish your console and Rpi dash? I have one I just need to finish the wiring and figure out a mount.

Just curious why you didn't run the pipe from the turbo to the pass side of the intercooler and the from the drivers side of the intercooler to the throttle body. To me it looks like a nice short path.

I agree with panel. Also when I got my bigger injectors, I just gave it the new specs and it adjusted for it. Was pretty good and just needed fine tuning.
